Siding our home

Hi..... I am sooo thankful that I have found this website. This appears to be a very old home (built in 1910) with wood siding mounted sometime in the 1970's, and the home is 2 stories high. The siding is wooden and is partially (one side) off the building, but the siding we have purchased covers up to 2700 sq. ft. I understand that contractors prefer to get their own materials (but in all seriousness we bought the siding as well as the tools to put it up)... oh well... live & learn. So I'm interested in looking into hiring a contractor as my husband works very long hours. Any information you can give us (ie: estimates) would be greatly appreciated.

Fireplace Reno

We renovated the main floor a few years ago and put in a very nice laminate flooring but now the fireplace needs remodeling. A standard Heatilator unit sits 7" off floor level. There is a raised platform, tile covered, 7" high, 16" deep and 85" wide. 8" tiles surround the unit and there is a mantle 58" off the floor. We want to remove the platform and have a floor level platform, replace the mantle. Around the fireplace we want a look that compliments the newly renovated kitchen backsplash which is a Tera cota color. Open to suggestions for a look as the main floor is very open. Counter tops are a chocolate quartz and the cabinets are Alder. The floor is bronze cherry.

Replace or remove a skylight, fix or replace a vent on the roof. Kitchen is a sunlight ceiling, would like to go to something different.

I have had problems with my skylight the entire time I have lived in my home. It dripped constantly over the winters until I had the shingles replaced. Then it almost stopped for three years. I then had my attic and vaulted ceiling (where the skylight is) insulated with blown in insulation-firberwall, and now it is worse than it ever was before. (It is worse when the sun beats down on the roof). I also have a fireplace that is in close proximity to the skylight. It is not used very often, but I don't know if this affects it. As well, in a room just off this area, I had the insulators attach the bathroom fan to the roof vent, but now it drips constantly over the winter when ther is warmer weather outside, or the sun beating down on the roof. I have washed the area with bleach several times because I am worried about black mold. As far as the skylight goes, if there is a product out there that would solve my problems,I am open to it. Otherwise, I want the skylight taken out, and my roof patched and shingled. Obviously some insulation will have to be fixed and the ceiling is vaulted with wood on it. I would like a light installed in its place. I have a ceiling fan in close proximity for the wiring if this helps. Now, the other alternative would be to put an alcove (is this what it is called), but I am not sure this is the bestway to go. I hope I have described my projects well enough. I have had far too many problems with my home, namely, I have had the foundation fixed on the original part of the house, as well as it was waterproofed and a sump pump put in. I really want to fix the issues I have listed because they would make our health better in the home. I will have to look at several solutions, and hopefully we can find something that is not too costly, as I have put so much into this home already.

Bathroom renovation

We live in Calgary and have a condo in Edmonton - Garden Grove (Duggan area) that we rent out. The condo is old, likely 40 plus years. Apparently there is a pretty serious leak as the tenant says water comes down through the kitchen light and the bathroom floor is getting soft. Since this is a rental property, we don't want to go high end, but need it fixed properly to avoid future issues. The entire bathroom needs to be redone, cabinets, faucets, tub, tiles, lights, flooring. We might be able to save the toilet as it was new about 4 years ago. As there is a tenant, it would have to be done as quickly as possible, with the least disruption to the tenant's life. There is a half bath they can use, but no other tub/shower.

Bathroom to be added to basement

We recently moved into our house and unfortunately we had a flood in our basement. It was caused due to the plug of the sump pump having become unplugged because some tile was stacked and placed against the plug in by the movers and then it rained...a lot. We like to be positive about things however, and look at this as an opportunity as we did not like the carpet or the paint colour down there anyway. As the carpet has been torn out along with some drywall we thought we would look at putting in a bathroom in our basement. We do not have anything roughed-in. We are looking to get the bathroom fully or partially done by outside parties as we may do the painting and tiling ourselves. The house is about 4 years old and is in Cameron heights. We would appreciate quotes from those companies that enjoy what they do, are insured, bonded and those who can keep an appointment. Sincerely, Pamela and Michael

Stone fence repair

Hi there, I have a stone fence encircling my residential property. The fence is leaning on one side, and I would like to know if it is fixable. One of the previous owners of the 1958 house was a stone mason and he created the fence. If the fence is not fixable, or easily fixable, then I would like to have the fence torn down on the one side that is leaning and a new fence erected on that side (not stone). Preferbly, I would like to have the stone fence fixed or reinforced in some way. Thank you for your help! ~Jen G.

Sidewalk Concrete Repair/Addition

We moved our back entrance from the side to the back of our house. There was a wooden step and platform at the side door which was removed leaving a large rectangular space (5'x10') that has no concrete along our side walkway. There is a bit of an elevation change between the concrete pathways on either side of this dirt space and it is currently both an eye sore and a hazard. Hoping you might be able to help me out with this. Thank you in advance. (Allendale area - southside of Edmonton)
