This company is not to be trusted. Not only do they perform a very substandard job, but they are also dishonest and difficult to deal with. You will charge at least 3 times the amount of what you were quoted by the time you're done. This is a terrible company with zero work ethics. Stay away, consider yourself informed. There are so many good ethical companies with great workmanship out there, this is not one of them.
Our renovation was complicated with asbestos and old knob and tube wiring uncovered. As well, a wall removed turned out to be a bearing wall. Thus, the job took longer than expected to complete and cost more than originally planned for. In the end we have a beautiful new living space that is everything we hoped for.
Zaineb, our designer was always available to help me choose tile, flooring, appliances, lighting and cabinetry. Mo, the project manager, problem solved and organized trades for demolition, framing, electrical, boarding, flooring , tiling and cleanup. Mo often used his own skills and tools to complete things that cropped up.
We are very happy with the final results however, we were often faced with long delays and a couple of trades that did not produce the quality we expected. VGC rectified these problems by bringing in different trades, but the delays and set backs were frustrating.
The biggest mistake was signing the contract with VGC. The whole experience was a nightmare. HEADACHE.
Read the ONE STAR comments in Google, Facebook and Houzz on VGC. Most of what others are saying happened to us as well. If we had a PM like their brochure promised, the wall wouldn't have been built 4 inches too shallow and this was not discovered until after mudding, sanding, primered and painted; VGC could not fit the washer and dryer in place and they had to demolish the new wall and redo. Additionally, VGC removed existing walls in our home without due diligence until we insisted to have the home's structural integrity checked by an engineer which resulted to 3 cross beams being installed - at an additional cost - to support the roof. This was safety 101 neglected. Those are only a couple of MANY headaches.
When reading VGC reviews online, question who is giving them the 5-star reviews. For instance, you will find the owner, Hussain Khather, giving himself 5 stars in Google Reviews and speaking in third person as if he is a client in his attempt to raise his own rating. Conduct research on the others giving 5-star reviews and you may be surprised at the result.
Before you sign that contract with VGC, conduct your research - This is your time, money and mental health at stake.
1) Check how many times VGC has been involved in court cases
Go to the BC government website "https://justice.gov.bc.ca/cso/esearch/civil/partySearch.do" click on "Search Civil" on the left menu choose both for "Individual" and "Organization" and type "VGC" in the name field. Click search. The result displays a string of court cases VGC has been involved in. It's in double digits.
2) Conduct research on those who gave a 5-star review. Are they legitimate?
3) Read the one star reviews; they're gold.
If we researched VGC as outlined in this review before we signed the contract, we would not have made the mistake. From personal experience, Vancouver General Contractors is absolutely not recommended.
It is with pleasure that we write this review of Vancouver General Contractors (VGC) for our kitchen renovation.
From the very beginning of our experience with VGC, the communication was great! We initially communicated by email as that was the easiest for my husband and I, however we always received a prompt response to our emails. Once the renovation started we were in regular contact with our Project Manager; at least once a week on the phone or in person, and often daily via text when things were busy. It was very reassuring to know he was there to answer any of our questions or address our concerns. When issues came up during demolition, as they are bound to do, our Project Manager worked hard with us to find the best cost effective solution, and made sure we were promptly updated with any changes.
We were also impressed with the quality of work. From the designer who worked hard with us to create a beautiful vision within a complicated space, to the trades who turned that vision into a reality. They were all very pleasant, knowledgeable and patient with us. They all took the time to answer our questions and discuss the work they were completing. We always felt fully informed and never felt we were being disruptive. They were also all great at brainstorming with us and the Project Manager when problems arose. At the end of the day, we always came home to a clean and tidy job site. Our project even completed ahead of schedule! Our Project Manager was great at having all of the trades scheduled to come and do their work.
Now that the job is done, we are impressed by the level of craftsmanship, and we are very pleased at how much more functional and attractive our kitchen is thanks to the help of the designer.
Our only suggestion for improvement would be to revisit the design after the demolition stage and rough construction is done. Sometimes structural issues during demolition result in changes that have an unintended impact on the design.
We are recommending VGC to anyone who asks, and one of our friends have already gone in for a quote.
Whole kitchen renovation was the job. One wall was removed to create floor-to-ceiling windows and most of kitchen was replaced during the renovation, including all of the cabinets and flooring. I’m generally satisfied with everything. The price was a little more than I expected, but I don’t follow the market that closely either. There was one small communication issue during the planning stage, but they kept closely in contact with me while they were building.
The guys at VGC did an amazing job with my kitchen. When I decided to go ahead with the renovation I wasn't sure what to expect. Hussain showed me a 3D design and after i added my input we came to an absolutely dream kitchen. I must say the job was done on time and I am very pleased to provide a reference for these great gentlemen.

At Vancouver General Contractors we pride ourselves in the level of service we provide our customers. Project managers, coordinators and designers are held accountable in our company. All team members are required to reply back to customers within 24 hours, but most get back within the hour.
Our ability to leverage technology is one of our core strengths, and in turn allows us to serve our clients a lot better than other contractors in the city. Most notably we have an online client portal that allows clients to post comment, pictures and videos while tagging key pieces of information to key team members such as the designer for design related questions. Essentially it s like the "news feed" in facebook, a centralized location for all information pertaining to your project. We keep a detailed history of your project from the design stage all the way to the deficiencies stage.
As an award winning renovations company we differentiate ourselves from all other "renovations" companies by our planning and design process. Tired of extra costs? Want to stay on budget? Our design build process allows you to have an accurate plan to ensure there are no surprises. Do NOT take on a renovation without full construction plans. Demo, electrical, plumbing, finishing plans are super important. Make sure you do it right the first time. I cannot tell you how many clients come to us because they got burned by a non-professional contractor.
