Turf is hard to grow under spruce trees due to acidity of soil and lack of sun and the fact that trees utilize a lot of water. A dog doesn't help either. You really have to give alot of water so you can leach out some of the acidity. If it's a shadier area try a fescue type grass. Not as green or lush as a bluegrass, but require less water and nutrients. Hope that helps.
