Hello,
I currently live in Montreal, Quebec. I have recently bought a house in Ottawa. I am looking to renovate my kitchen. I am doing my due diligence when it comes to hiring a general contractor. I know here in Quebec, that any general contractor, should have an RBQ license to operate.
What kind of license should general contractors have in Ottawa? Is their work guaranteed? Do they provide free estimation?
Thanks for the replies.
Hi George,
Things you should look for are wsib clearance, insurance, and if the carpenter is certified. There are a lot of guys who are not certified in any way that own general contractor companies. In ontario if you have a truck you can own a renovation business.

Hello Gilbert,
Thank you for the reply.
Just one more question,
As for the carpenter, what kind of license should he have? I mean, who is authorized to issue him a certificate, Ottawa City?
Hello George,
As a carpenter he would not need a certificate or trade license. In Ontario, carpentry is a voluntary trade not a restricted trade, although trade licensing is available through the Ontario college of trades.
He would however need a city of Ottawa business license. Along with WSIB and general liability.
Regards
Dave
