Recently I have experience water damage to my upstairs bamboo hard wood and my basement. My bungalow style condo is roughly 840 square feet built in 1979. I am interested in repairing or replacing my damaged hardwood and repairing/replacing the floors and paneling in my basement as well as replacing the hanging ceiling with drywall.
1944 built, 1 and 1/2 storey stucco home in central-North Edmonton (Spruce Avenue).
BASEMENT with 2 bachelor suites and one shared bathroom that had some Ice Dam and Water Seepage. Floors completely removed and new cement poured. All walls insulated, drywalled and painted. ALL FLOORING still needs to be installed including stairs(approx. 1000 sq ft of lino/laminate + tile in bathroom). KITCHEN sinks need to be reconnected to plumbing, one kitchen cabinets/sink installed, all BATHROOM fixtures installed, bathroom ceiling R&R, mechanical room insulated & boarded w/ shelving, furnace room shelving, SUMP PUMP R&R, insulate sump area underneath stairwell, 3-5 doors R&R. **Some work may need to be redone (e.g., leveling approx 30 sq foot of concrete floor, re-situating bathroom door, light switch and other electrical checked).
UPSTAIRS needs drywall patched around windows, and REPAINT of MAIN KITCHEN ceiling and one wall, as well as repaint of small staircase.
Also one new dishwasher install (dedicated circuit breaker already installed) and hot water tank diode/dip tube replaced.
Prefer one contractor to manage it all with appropriately credentialed workers, but Open to separating FLOORING work from PLUMBING and ELECTRICAL.
References and warranty on all work required.
Thank you.

Upgrading existing secondary suite in 50 year old house, approx 1000 sq ft.
I require the following;
Electrical upgrade to 100 Amp, Wired smoke /co2 detectors and more plugs.
Two new furnaces with fresh air supply.
Bathroom and kitchen reno, cabinets and exhaust fan.
Flooring, painting and trim.
Landscaping, grading.
I am currently looking ONLY for an online estimate.
I will be purachasing a "fixer upper" in the summer and I am wondering which of the two renovations: adding on a level above the main floor or jacking up a house and adding a new basement to an older home is the most cost effective and easiest to find a contractor?
The specs for the homes which I am currently looking at would be 800-1000 square feet and have been built from 1940-1950. So I have heard these called the "war time" homes.
Ultimately, I would like to have a home which offers three levels: basement (which can be rented out), main floor and an upstairs. While looking at houses on the market the houses seem to have two of the three levels but not all three, which leads me to ask how much would it cost to reno a home the way I would like.
So long winded question:
Is it cheaper to build a basement in an existing home or add a level to the main floor? Any estimate would be appreciated!!!
Thank you for your time!!

I have a 1977 house with an in-law suite.
The lower level bathroom needs to be totally rebuilt..... with a tub-shower in place of a shower.
The upper 2 bathrooms consist of i) a tub-shower, sink and toilet
ii) an en-suite shower, sink and toilet
I want to knock the wall through and have a much larger bathroom with a steam shower, soaker tub, one toilet and sink.
I want a washer dryer plumbed in.
The house is a bungalow in the neighbourhood of Ottewell, 1037 sq. ft., built in the late 50's with 3 bedrooms (one used as an office) on the main level. The master bedroom and main bath are too small and we'd like more space. We'd like to potentially reconfigure so there are only 2 bedrooms upstairs - knock the wall down between the office and spare room to create one bigger bedroom and build a walk in closet and also knock the wall down between the bathroom and spare room to enlarge and redo the bathroom. The spare bedroom would be gone and there would be a door from the new enlarged bedroom into the walk in closet and we'd like a door into the bathroom from the bedroom as well as keep the existing door from the hallway.
We would also consider adding onto to the front of the house as well. Potentially onto the 2 front bedrooms and enlarge and redo the bathroom. We're not sure what is possible and are open to ideas.
Thank you.
We have a 1960's home in the Parkview Area in the West End of Edmonton. We are looking to have a few projects completed. The first project is reinsulating the exterior walls in the 3 main floor bedrooms. In addition, we would need new windows installed in those 3 bedrooms. The second project would be a complete re-do of a small master bedroom ensuite - 3 piece ensuite, all materials have already been selected but not ordered. The final project would be a partial reno of the main bathroom. This would include replacing a double sink counter top with quartz (already selected and priced out), as well as updating some of the plumbing fixtures. Depending on how these projects go and the price, we will have several other projects that are less pressing but that will need to get addressed at some point. We would love to find a reliable contractor who would be wiling to provide a quote for the current services required.
Thanks.
Jaclyn
We are hoping to transform two closets from adjacent rooms into one larger closet. This would involve constructing a small wall and finishing it to "Paint-ready", as well as framing and installation of closet doorway and doors on new closet. Some trim work and finishing would also be required around windows and doors in bedroom.
5 foot by 5 foot bathroom - 3 piece with corner shower stall. Take space from 2 back to back bedroom closets that are 4 ft by 2 ft in size. Add 1 foot on each of 2 sides to give a 5 foot by 5 foot room.
To make new closets, we would like to look at catilevering the exterior walls of the two bedrooms out under the eave overhang up to 2 feet out and 4 feet wide each.
Hi! We are looking some honourable contractors to DISCOUNT or DONATE their time for a very worth cause. Bethany was a gifted 12-year-old girl who was looking forward to her Grade 6 graduation, but one night she went to bed with a headache and her and her family's lives changed forever in the blink of an eye!
In the early hours on Sunday May 18 2008, a strange sound was heard coming from their basement. Her parents found their daughter in the midst of a massive seizure. Later that day at the Stollery Children's Hospital, they found out that Bethany had suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm that resulted in bleeding in the brain (stroke). She had very little chance of making it through the night...then very little chance of recovering...then after 15 months in the hospital she was discharged with little hope of any further recovery. She was proclaimed €œa blind, quadriplegic, vegetable€...fast forward four years...Bethany is re-learning to walk, talk, print, speak, eat, drink...in hopes of regaining the best quality of life for herself.
Since being discharged from the Glenrose, she has been living in the family's dining room -- the only spot where she can be supervised 24/7 and that is accessible, but she wants and needs some privacy! You may have heard the story already as we have been featured on the local news, newspaper, and radio. We are in the process of adding a wheelchair accessible entrance, bathroom, and bedroom onto the side of our house to accommodate Bethany's needs. It is approximately 650 square feet. The structure is up and the roof is on, so Bethany's dream is becoming a reality.
We are have two wonderful home builders who are donating their time and talents as general contractors, as well as several other trades and companies...who are donating and hugely discounting to see this dream become a reality.
We are still in need of many supplies and services to see this project to completion ASAP:
To name a few:
- trim and soffits for the roof and the labour to do this
- an electrician
- a drywaller/mudder and taper
- someone to lay the sidewalk around the perimeter (the concrete has been donated)
- a mason to do the stone work on the front of the addition
- a labourer to remove the existing carpet and laminate floor/install the new vinyl floor
- a tile setter for Bethany's shower/bathroom
- someone to move the furniture so floor can be removed for floor to come in and out
- for a bin to assist in removing building materials from the site
and more!
Would be able to assist in this project?
The completed room will be featured on Global News and The Edmonton Journal again in the fall; as well, as your name could go on our website and you are welcome to our project on your website.
PLEASE contact us if this a project that you would like to be a part of:
Thank you for taking the time to read this e-mail.
Have a wonderful day,
Karen

We have a 1950s 1,100 sq ft bungalow. There has been very little change to the house. It is in very good structural condition with two small bedrooms and one master bedroom and one full bath on first floor and one bath with just shower in finished basement. We want to open up the first floor floor plan, possibly add a half bath, redo existing bath, possibly change wooden floors to wood we like more, at least in part of the space. We are planning a full kitchen remodel, with stone/granite counter tops. We are considering adding a second floor with a master and a small bedroom and one bath, depending on cost. We also want to redo the basement and build a new garage with or without a suite, depending on cost.
We would like to do the whole project in as environmentally sensitive a way as we can afford. We don't need a net zero house, but do want high efficiency, low toxicity and want to add solar panels.
I need a quote to remove two through-the-wall air conditioners, seal up the wall (vapour barrier, insulation, etc), drywall the interior patch and replace exterior cedar siding.
Depending on the quote, I would be willing to contract the work immediately. Prefer the repairs to be done sometime between Dec 5 & 23 2014.
