Ideas for Revamping the Basement

Basement Finishing

Traditionally, the basement has been in the same category as the attic—storage space. The upper and lower reaches of the house always seem to be the collection areas where holiday decorations, unused possessions, and oddball stuff end up. At least, that's how it used to be. These days, the basement is taking on an entirely new role—one that I believe you'll welcome.

Bye-Bye Pack Rat

Gone are the days of squirreling things away in the basement. Don't believe us? Check out our photos of revamped basements. This sometimes-underground space is rapidly becoming a hot spot for renovation. Did you know that by finishing your basement, you may double the living space of your home, particularly if your basement is full sized? It's time to say bye-bye to the pack rat days, and here are some basement ideas to get you started:

Idea #1: Personalized Home Theatre

Don't pretend; we all want one! Most of us have tried to turn our living and bonus rooms into our personal home theatres, but it's not an easy task. If you've ever wondered what a home theatre is, then here's a tidbit of information to ponder. In essence, a home theatre refers to the audio and video equipment setup in your home. The goal is to duplicate the movie theatre experience. But let's be honest; it takes more than a big screen TV and an epic sound system to truly duplicate that cinema sensation.

An unfinished basement is the perfect area to build a home theatre that really rocks. Not only is there space for all of the equipment and furniture, but you have the unique opportunity to sound proof the room. You can even enhance the acoustics to amplify that cinema experience.

Idea #2: Expanded Family Space

How often do you complain about the size of your family space? Sometimes that family room or den just isn't comfortable once all the kids-and their friends-pile in. Instead of contemplating the idea of knocking out walls to expand, why not make practical use of your basement?

Regardless of whether your downstairs has windows or not, it can be a phenomenal location for a sizeable family space-especially if the basement is full sized. Depending on the amount of space you have to work with, you can even incorporate a small kitchenette or dining area.

Idea #3: Elbowroom—(Wo)Man Cave

We all like our elbowroom. Personal space is important, particularly as your family grows. We've all heard of the "Man Cave," a location either attached or detached from the house that's exclusively for Dad and his friends. It's a male only zone most of the time. What if you've dreamt of one and just can't find the space for it? It's time to look under your feet and check the potential of your basement.

I know what you're thinking. My wife would never let me take over the entire basement. You're probably right, but there is a solution. Contact an experienced remodeling company or contractor, and they just may be able to help you draft a proposal that turns the basement into the location of two caves: one for you and one for the Mrs—a Woman Cave!

Idea #4: Adult Wreck Room

Ask not what you can do for the basement, but what the basement can do for you! Have the kids taken over the house? Are you shy on space for some adult time? Your basement could hold the key.

A finished basement can hold just about anything from a mini-bar to an entirely separate living space. If you're in need of an adult wreck room, it's time to clear out the storage space below and make it more practical. You can even delegate a super organized walk-in storage area so your seasonal treasures still have a place to go.

How to Get Started

Now that your creative light bulb is lit, let's talk about how to get started. Depending on your location and renovation goals, you may need to take into consideration building codes. Things like wiring, plumbing, and heating and cooling are also potential ventures when finishing that downstairs area. While a basement renovation can be a do-it-yourselfer, I wouldn't recommend it. You want the revamp to be done right to maximize your enjoyment. Besides, letting a professional contractor assist will turn that finished basement space into increased home value.

The best way to get started is to know your goals and find a local contractor. Be sure to check up on the prior credentials. See their ratings and TrustScore, read reviews. Ask for recommendation. Pick their brains a bit about your project, and see if they're going to be a good fit.
