My Two Cents for Bathroom Remodeling on a Budget

Bathroom remodelling

Bathrooms are the spaces in our homes where we freshen up, get ready for bed, or wind down from a hard day. And you deserve to have a bathroom space in your home that is relaxing and attractive, somewhere you can feel comfortable, pampered and secure. But bathroom remodeling can get expensive with complicated plumbing alterations and trendy new fixtures. How can you give the bathroom a makeover without flushing your budget down the drain? Here are my two cents!

#1. Lipstick and Rouge

There is a renovation tactic that appeals to many who are looking for a quick, inexpensive pick me up. Nothing structural or major is altered and all of the plumbing remains as it is. All that really happens is the room finishes get made up (or toned down, depending on their current condition). This usually involves painting the walls and sometimes giving the trim and the doors a fresh coat of paint or varnish. It's amazing how much different a bathroom can look with a new color on the walls. Look for complimentary or accent colors that are already there - be they in the flooring, vanity or even the tub. Black and white color combos can give an older bathroom a more modern look - add a splash of color to liven up the space perfectly. Other color schemes like warm tones or cool tones can work well, as long as the existing, bolted down items in the bathroom will coordinate. Once you have painted it's very easy to change out the decor. A new shower curtain and a fresh set of towels will do wonders. Also think about how to incorporate new window treatments and art work. Shelving can be hung for storage and as something eye catching and decorative. Install a new light fixture or simply add a new cover, put up some finials on the curtain rod and you will have a freshly made up bathroom on a fairly limited budget.

#2. DIY Where It Makes Sense

Often a bathroom remodeling is not the place for a DIY job. You likely aren't a licensed plumber and no one should mess with their plumbing if they are not properly trained. However you may be able to tackle installing a new vanity or changing out a light fixture. By doing what you can the labor costs will shrink and you will be able to afford more. Hire a contractor for tub and sink installations, although many times a homeowner with a little bit of skill can replace their existing toilet. As long as the new model going in is of the same design as the existing model, it is fairly straightforward. If you're opting for a wall mounted toilet instead of a traditional floor mounted model, it's best to call in a plumber. If you are planning a bathroom remodeling project with limited funds, don't despair. This room can be made over with a new coat of paint and some selective features and accents. If you do need more than just lipstick and rouge, try to DIY any of the larger projects that you can, saving money on expensive labor. Always hire a plumber when needed though, as the repairs that result from inexperienced workers can be costlier than you imagine.
