Steve and his crew renovated the whole of our basement to install flooring, walls, ceilings, a full washroom and all associated electrics. The work was both professional and done at a fair price. The results can only be classified as first-rate with a fine eye for detail displayed throughout. Steve and his team performed admirably and were easy to work with. I can highly recommend them for your home renovation needs.
Completely remodeled kitchen, cabinets installed, flooring installation, complete bathroom remodel with ceramic tile tub surround, painting, stairway railing and drywall.
Very professional and quality work. Would definitely recommend for your next renovation.
Chipped tile in the bathroom, uneven finish on the ceiling, horrible cabinetry, paint left on the floor, the list goes on and on. As do the excuses. It was supposed to be an 8 week job, but it’s been over nine months so far. Still incomplete and we now believe he’s abandoned the job entirely.
Steve's rebuttal is the first we've heard from him since he took our money, said he would be back within a week to finish up and then proceeded to abandon the project. The review was only written after Steve failed to respond to several texts asking when he was going to complete the project.
In response to his comments:
The chips on the tile are NOT microscopic and can be seen from several feet away. The piece of metal trim he used to cover the chipped tile in the alcove has, as he called it, "sloppy silicone". We asked for him to replace the chipped tile, but it was never done and I'm happy to provide photos.
The ceiling height is a standard 8'. It's not like we added the windows or patio doors. They were already there when the project began. Several other contractors and painters have seen the "finished" product and said that the strapping wasn't shimmed properly and that the mudding and taping wasn't done correctly. They suggested skimming the ceiling again to resolve the issue. The painters said that they couldn't cover it up. Steve's solution? Install blinds. I can't make this stuff up.
By "custom made", Steve means he made them himself. To the best of my knowledge, he is not a cabinet maker, something that might explain why it took several months for him to complete them. We aren't talking about just paint drips here, there are unfinished edges that he said he would fix. They're built from MDF and the edges are unfinished. He "ironed on" the trim around the rest of the cabinetry. Steve had the specs and the actual appliances several months before he built the cabinets and STILL had to rebuild them several times because he hadn't measured properly. He actually attempted to install a chipped cabinet and glued a piece back on hoping we wouldn't notice it. We are still trying to figure out why the microwave box is light maple inside while the rest of the open units are stained dark.
Paint on the floor of the mudroom is in the grout and on the floor itself. One line stretches over six inches. The rest of the drops vary in size, but there are about twenty of them. It speaks to Steve's lack of attention to detail / caring.
We wanted to have the project completed by July 2nd, in time for our son's birthday party, but this was not the case. Steve had promised to come back and address the issues on several occasions, only not to show up. We had the one payment remaining, the one that according to his contract, was due upon completion. We gave him the majority of the money owing after he badgered us relentlessly and he's since disappeared.
Changing our minds and adding to the scope of work? Is this a joke? We changed tile selections because of availability. We picked one that was in-stock rather than waiting for the ones we wanted, specifically to move the project along more quickly. The only additional work was early on, when we decided to upgrade the electrical panel and update the ducting as per HIS instructions. We had Steve re-do the fireplace mantel because the original finish was so incredibly poor. As for scope of work, we had wanted a bunch of other work done. Things like built ins for the living room and the mud room. We actually reduced the scope of work because the quality of his finish work was so poor and the project was already so far behind. Keep in mind we were told that this project would be done in 6-8 weeks, meaning February. I took pictures almost daily and they're time stamped, so you can see the rate of progress for yourselves.
I'm glad to hear that Steve still intends to finish the job. To date he hasn't shown up when he said he would and he has yet to respond to our texts asking when he can come in to complete the work. As mentioned above, his rebuttal is the first we've heard from him.
I look forward to updating this with a positive note. Steve's a nice guy, but this has taken way too long. The rest of the money is waiting to be paid out, again as per his contract, when the project is completed. Items that he agreed needed to be addressed and said that he would come to finish.
October 10th - still no contact from Steve.
October 27th - still no contact from Steve. We assume he has abandoned the project entirely. We attempted to close the permit but it failed inspection. It states that the contractor did not apply for a permit to build a legal bedroom. Our signed contract states specifically that Steve was to complete the basement, including a legal bedroom.
The chipped tile that is noted by the client was microscopic chips cutting a black ceramic tile where the clave would appear in the chips. The tile had black silicone put around the premise for the niche but he was not accepting that as it was too glossy compared to the matte black tile. We removed the silicone and the grout cut the tile with a Dremel tool installed new returns trim and finished it again. At this time it was acceptable until a week or so later that mr. Steer noted he was not happy with the appearance although it was better. You have to look at the tile with your face pushed up against it along the same line to see any marks and need a magnifying glass to see the chips, the Finish is more than acceptable standard.
The client doesn't mention that the ceiling is approx 2.5" above two large windows(4ft x 5ft) and a 6ft patio door or that the joists are crowning up & down. As noted to Mr. Cyr on numerous occasions the combination of the above issues with direct sunlight is creating shadows which alter the appearance of the finished product. Also it wasn't noted that we skim coated the joints a second time and reprinted/ painted the ceiling 6 times to meet his approval. He was informed that the installation of window treatments (such as blinds) would eliminate the problem. He refused to accept the fact of the issue.
In regards to the cabinetry, the units are custom made with hardwood doors and are definitely more than cheap quality cabinets. There is one door above the fridge that has a slight paint line or stain line in it that can be corrected. The balance of the cabinets are more than acceptable but Mr. Cyr seems to find issues with minut differences in the finish of the cabinets.
As for the paint on the floor it is not noted that the spots are about the size of a pencil eraser and approximately five or six spots on a tile floor that were missed during cleanup again a very minut issue to even complain about.
The project was substantially completed three and a half months ago and then there was a delay due to discussions on extras and payment due. Majority of the delays in this project or do to covid-19 issues of getting materials during that time, receiving some damaged materials from suppliers and the client changing their minds or adding to the scope of work. The client still owes a substantial amount of money for the contract and is with holding it until completion of a few minor deficiencies which are trying to be scheduled around other projects. I believe that the matter is being taken out of contrast and making a mountain out of a molehill. We fully intend to complete the deficiencies in an effort to make Mr. Cyr satisfied but not entirely sure that will be possible.
Above Board Consulting is very professional, knowledgable and friendly. Our deck was built with great care with special thanks to Jerry and Jake for their attention to details. The job took a little extra time to ensure a beautiful finished product and we were not charged more than the estimated amount. We are very pleased that we chose Above Board for this project and would highly reccommend them.
It was our pleasure to have worked for you and we really appreciate the ice water during the hot days. We enjoyed meeting both of you and hope to be of service for any future projects.
