After getting CHC to replace our furnace in March we decided to use them again for our AC on July 15th, 2021….a very costly mistake.
Property Damage:
1. In replacing our AC unit one of the technicians damaged a pipe in our furnace room and caused a leak then knowingly hid it from us. We had to discover it on our own and put a bucket to prevent further damage.
2. The technician put “tin tape” on all the basement vents covering not only the vent but erroneously covering the ceiling as well and damaging it. CHC said they would provide the paint to repair this. When they came to take a paint chip they pulled off a chunk of the ceiling as well. Now we not only need paint but dry wall repair as well.
Unprofessional:
1. Bait and Switch: We were told we could get a same day repair for our AC unit but we also inquired about replacing it. We decided on the repair but then somehow the part that was available for the same day repair just moments before could no longer be provided same day.
2. Chris (who identified himself as one of the owners/partners) sold us an AC unit almost double the size of the unit we had assuring us of improved performance in cooling the top floor. We specifically asked if we would be able to see an improvement in the cooling given the duct work. Without hesitation he said yes. After the new unit was installed we saw NO difference in the performance/cooling of the top floor. When we called Chris back to make him aware he said he was aware this would happen. He defined ‘improved performance’ of an AC unit as saving a few pennies on your monthly bill!!! He was so eager for the +$5000 sale that he just said anything to get us to buy and completely misled us.
3. CHC agreed to fix the property damage and provide a solution for the top floor free of charge by Tuesday July 20th. We are now at August 3rd and not only have they not resolved the issues but Chris will not return our calls/send our calls to voicemail. The head office/call centre person has also been unable to get Chris or any of the other partners to call us back and resolve the issue.
4. Finally, after the install they left our basement in a complete mess. Black oil on our new floors, black fingerprints all over our bathroom wall, toilet and sink and black fingerprints all over the ceiling. We had to spend about an hour scrubbing everything to clean up after them.
We cannot emphasize enough, DO NOT go with this company.
Terry Hart, an independent HVAC contractor with 30+ years HVAC experience working for City Home Comfort installed a Trane furnace, air conditioner, humidifier and UV light air purifier at our Toronto house.
Noxious fumes were noticed after the installation was complete.
We called City Home Comfort several times and asked for an appointment with a technician. We were suffering from headaches and had moved our children upstairs to sleep.
The smell of burning plastic from the furnace was due to the melting plastic that was not removed when the UV light was installed. Chris Shakur, the second technician, found melting plastic but no gas leak. Chris Shakur confirmed that he didn’t use a gas detector.
We found the gas leak by sniffing the piping into the furnace and finding a leak at a joint.
Chris Shakur returned when we called to report the gas leak.
We called City Home Comfort and asked to speak with the owner. Chris Derhak, owner of City Home Comfort for 40 years, introduced himself as the head of customer service but when pressed, agreed that he was the owner. We asked Chris Derhak to meet us at our house to review the issues (too many to list here) but Chris refused.
We notified the TSSA (www.tssa.org) and Enbridge Gas Distribution, who found a large number of safety violations and issued a TSSA Inspector's order to City Home Comfort. Additional warning hazard notifications were issued by Enbridge Gas.
Terry Hart returned to our house and spent a full day addressing the order including replacement of gas piping, the UV air purifier and venting. For the first time, Terry conducted a gas pressure test.
Due to negligent work completed by Terry Hart, City Home Comfort risked our family's health. Chris Derhak's lack of accountability and professionalism is appalling.
My experience with City Home Comfort has been first class. The technician arrived at my house at the scheduled time and completed the maintenance in a timely manner. All of my questions were answered immediately.
I would not hesitate to recommend City Home Comfort to my family and friends.
Jeff came out and gave me an estimate, I really liked his approach and ideas on how to keep my house evenly cooled. We have a three story house and the top floor get so hot. Jeff was suggesting that we get the Trane 16 seer air conditioner
But after getting prices for it I thought that it was a little out of our budget considering we don’t know how long we’re staying in the house.
We decided to buy a Goodman air conditioner which apparently is noisier than the other units but it doesn’t seem to bother us, as it is in the Side of the yard. Jeff helper us to set a budget for our Mitsubishi slim ductless unit to be installed on third floor paired with our goodman main floor a/c. The Mitsubishi ductless is quiet and has a remote for us to control the on the third-floor independently. I didn’t realize how big of a job it is to install a ductless. There was lots of drilling. And scaffolding as if our entire house was being refaced. But it was only up for two days. City home comfort did a good job and the Mitsubishi ductless cooling unit Is my favourite part. If we we do move, I would use them again.
Thank you Jeff for your help all the way through this.
These guys are great, came in with nothing but polite manners and great professionalism, Daren the technician was absolutely amazing, any questions I had he answered for me and then some. I barley heard the guys while I was home doing my work and they were done in a timely manner. They put drop cloths down and I even purchased the 10 year warranty for peace of mind. Couldn’t have asked for a better service as I’ve had some really bad cheap Ac guys in the past, if anyone asks me about an Ac or furnace I’m definetly referring them to city home comfort as you should to. Thanks CHC look forward to seeing you guys next season!
Chris was very friendly and quick with a quote. Installed the same week. Amazing!! Very satisfied with the installation of my Furnace and A/C unit. The house is already feeling nice and cool within 30 minutes of them finishing. The crew of 3 worked hard for 6 hours and showed me their work and asked if I had any questions. Nice Job!
