This phrase has been bantered around for decades and most people assign the origin of it to project management. So what are contractors talking about when we say 'pick any two?'

Here is the story. My insurance agent told me that I needed an inspection of my aluminum wiring on the home I have owned and lived in for over thirty years. Really? So I started to call Electrical Contractors in my area to get someone to do this. After five telephone calls...not one wanted to do this work. On the fifth call, I asked the contractor, why does no one want to do this inspection? His response was, and I quote: " Your house is considered "Old Work" and most contractors these days don't want to do this type of electrical work. They would rather bang in new wiring into framed houses before the dry wall gets put in. They can make more money doing this type of work rather than test, inspect and repair existing wiring from a house that has been deemed "Need To Inspect" by an Insurance Company. I finally found Datawise Solutions. John Kuehnl-Cadwell the Master Electrician returned my call while he was in British Columbia. ( While he was in B.C. on his dime !!!!) I made an appointment for him to come and see me. We were treated with utmost respect and John educated us on how to get our home safe and up to today's standards and codes. Within three days John emailed me with three levels of quotes to fix my house. We negotiated which level I wanted to do, he agreed 100% on my choice. Within a few days, John contacted me and informed me of when Datawise Solutions could perform the work. They came and performed all the work as expected. Everyone associated with this company showed not only top level professionalism carrying out their duties, but also kept my wife and I up to date on every task they performed. I can only give them a 100 percent performance approval. But if it were possible, I would give them 110 percent approval. I highly recommend Datawise Solutions for any electrical work you need. I am 100 percent satisfied with John and his entire team.
The lads arrived bang on time. Since I was working out of town my wife took care of things and felt very comfortable with the 2 workers. They did a great job including going up into the loft and running a new wire to hook up a light which I didn't know existed until I tried to take a bulge out my plastered ceiling. And to top it off the price was lower than I envisaged based on the time they were at my home.
I appreciate the good work John and Matthew did in my apartment. I am a photographer and need to spotlight my best framed and laminated prints. In addition they upgraded all my electric switches as I wanted.
I recommend this company for electrical work
Very professional service for a very reasonable price. Datawise cleaned up electrical and data cabling that was done by other contractors and relocated our data patch panel to a more accessible location. Very response service, they were onsite the same day! Job well done; would definitely use them again for all of our electrical and data needs.
Contacted John through their website and arranged for an estimate on the job at my income property in Welland, all arrangements and quotes were done online via email. Work was completed on the day that was decided within the timeline quoted. Provided information for me to forward on to my tenants. Was very impressed with the finished product when I was finally able to visit the property. I have added photos of work, first is how the panel looked like when property was purchased the next 2 are the finished product.
Datawise was very professional providing a detailed written estimate of the work to be done. Although the owner John was out of the province he communicated with his staff to ensure the work was properly done and completed in a timely manner.
John is by far the most professional electrician I ever dealt with. He was punctual and immediately determined the problem with my wiring. He had machine shop custom manufacture retrofit sleeves for my 1950s coach lights. I would recommend John to anyone in need of electrical expertise.
Professional from start to finish!
The quality of the work is exceptional and you could not ask for a more informative and helpful person to do the job.
If I ever have any other electrical jobs that I need to have completed, I would not hesitate to call Datawise again.
Thank you!
I called Datawise when I had problems with flickering lights in my house. John responded within 2 hours and offered to come out the same day to check my connections. When he arrived, he explained everything as he worked. I was able to watch the whole process and he showed me the various parts inside my circuit boxes and explained their function. He spent about 1/2 hour tightening the connections in 3 circuit boxes in my home, many of which were quite loose.
John was professional and friendly. Although the job was relatively small and minor, I would not hesitate to give him a call for larger projects. Highly recommended.
Called in Datawise Solutions after reading some positive reviews online, and I certainly was not disappointed. I really felt like I was dealing with honest professionals. John knew his job and knew it well, and dealt with the problem quickly. It is nerve racking deciding which electrician to use, but when he left I felt I had made the right choice. Would not hesitate to call him again and would certainly recommend him to friends.

This phrase has been bantered around for decades and most people assign the origin of it to project management. So what are contractors talking about when we say 'pick any two?'
Recently I was involved in a conversation with some fellow tradesmen (I was the only Electrical Contractor (EC)) on the topic of "Value". The topic was really about how to explain to a client about the value of work that is not seen not "lipstick and mascara". So to help explain some of the differences in the electrical area I will offer up the following.
There is nothing stopping you and your Electrical Contractor from adding more to the requirements of the code to meet your future needs. While there is a cost to do this, the cost of doing it during the renovation or build is far less than doing it several years down the road where it is possible that you will end up removing some of your new renovation work to facilitate the new requirement.
Just like many other electrical contractors (ECs), I get numerous calls for estimates to upgrade a client's electrical panel or service. For many ECs this is the mainstay of their business and are very good at doing them quickly and with excellent quality. However, don't be fooled just because they have done many of these upgrades. Just like any other type of work, do your due diligence, ask the right questions and do your homework.
I was recently at a client's home and while discussing how to solve a particular electrical problem they were having, I came across a bundle of wires. I originally thought that they were computer network cables and then I took a few minutes to look at the markings on the cables and explain what they meant and what they might be for. As you can imagine the response was, "it's all Greek to me".
I am sure there are not many of us that have not been the brunt of a joke that took us unsuspectingly by using terminology that we were not familiar with. While we went along willingly looking for the left-handed screwdriver , when it comes to electrical work don t let your electrical contractor try to bedazzle you with terms and acronyms that leave you confused or unsure.
I can always tell when home sales are up or insurance policies are due; I get calls for aluminum wire inspections. One of the most important things during my AL wire inspection is educating the potential buyer or the current homeowner on the facts about AL wire and helping them sort out the hyperbole that their house is going to burn down because it has AL wring or some other ridiculous statement.
This is the call of hundreds, if not thousands of fire safety organizations and fire departments around North America, and I believe that most of us think it is true, smoke detectors save lives.
Everywhere in Canada a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is required in different parts of homes and businesses. A whole article on the building code requirements and interpretations could be written, but today I want to focus strictly on the facts and fictions surrounding GFCIs.
