This phrase has been bantered around for decades and most people assign the origin of it to project management. So what are contractors talking about when we say 'pick any two?'

John and his team are wonderful. Some cabling needed to be put in place so that my parent's internet connection would work. Since they are older, they really don't understand technology but since they received an iPad for Christmas, they needed to be set up with internet and wireless.I did not want them to worry about this set up and while I thought it would not be an issue, the internet provider we chose let us know that there was additional wiring that was needed. I called John, explained the situation and he was great. My mother was very impressed -- he worked quickly, explained things to her, made sure the set up was working and there was no mess to clean up. I would highly recommend John and his team.
We were very pleased with the work John and Datawise Solutions provided for us. We hired John to provide an inspection of the aluminum wiring system as part of a pre-sale inspection of a home we were about to purchase. John was professional, courteous and thorough while performing the inspection and was able to answer any questions we had.
On top of the verbal summary, he also provided us with a detailed report and DVD of his findings and provided recommendations. We also appreciated that he pointed out other possible deficiencies that were not a part of the inspection. We would definitely consider hiring Datawise Solutions again for any electrical work we would need in the future.
We posted for a quote on Saturday, noon and John contacted us approx. 3 hours later by phone. I explained the problem over the phone, he quoted a price and was @ our house with-in 30 minutes. John was very efficient and true to his word how long the job would take, fixed the situation and was on his way. Thanks to him we had 'light' for our guests that evening. I would recommend John and his company to anyone that wants good reliable service, is cost effective and efficient.
John and his helper Matt did an amazing job of replacing one fixture with another. They encountered a few issues along the way, however they managed to overcome them, without getting frustrated with the design of the new fixture. They were prompt, courteous and did a fantastic job - we could not be happier.
An electrical breaker in a bedroom circuit tripped intermittently. Since this is a potentially serious safety issue we looked for an electrician to advise us on the repair. We called Datawise at around midday, got a call back from John within an hour and he arrived at about 4.30pm having called 2 more times to confirm his timing.
He diagnosed the problem, explaining at all times what he was doing, Came back the next day to follow up and discussed how to replace a length of wire feeding the circuit which had developed a fault. He called back again the next morning to ensure we were comfortable doing the repair ourselves and offered to help either over the phone or in person if required.
I replaced the wire, as John had recommended, resolving the problem.
Not only were we very pleased with the service but the bill was also very reasonable. We will definitely call Datawise next time we need an electrician.
I have an older home with 50+ year wiring. I was tripping breakers as well as the main breaker in my panel. I had issues with some suspect wiring in my home and attached workshop. I contacted Datawise and John quickly responded and set-up an appointment that worked around my work schedule. He showed up on time and spent over an hour going through the home looking at the issues I wanted addressed and pointing out other things as he went along. He came back a second time to go over things in further detail to make sure that we were both on the same page as to what type of new panel was needed to be put in and what problems may result (ie that the meter and stack may need to be replaced as well - which, in fact, they did need to be replaced). He later presented me with a detailed estimate of the work involved and the approximate costs. Two days were booked to complete the work. John and his crew showed up on time, were polite and friendly and very dedicated to completely the work in a timely manner. He was especially good with my son's interest in what they were doing and allowing him to watch when it was safe to do so. The costs were higher than the estimate, but I added a few things along the way. I would definately recommend John and his team to anyone I know in the future and will have them back if I require more work in the future. I can now sleep soundly at night knowing that my home is electrically safe and sound. Thank you to the whole Datawise Solutions Team!
I had a huge problem with the main fuse panel while I was replacing light switches and outlets after painting.
I called Datawise Solution Inc and they were able to diagnose the problem over the phone.
Help arrived within an hour and was fixed very quickly.
Great service from start to finish. I will definitely call them again in the future. A five star company in my opinion.
The job was to replace the 100 amp existing electrical panel in our house with a 200 amp panel as per request by our home insurance company. It was a job that needed to be done quickly and I looked for a local resource and ran across the Handy Canadian website and found John Kuehnl-Cadwell and his Datawise company mentioned with good reviews. Seeing that he was also local to Welland I requested an estimate. He came promptly on the date and time arranged, took some pictures, checked out exactly what all he had to do, and within a day or two he had provided us with a full statement of work and the exact cost we would be charged. I had done some searches on the internet and his price was extremely reasonable.
A few days before the work was to be done, he provided us with documentation as to what we could expect, what he would need us to do ahead of his arrival, and confirmation that he had everything arranged with the inspectors and Welland Hydro for the day of the switch.
On the day of the work, he arrived right on time with his apprentice, and got right to work, preparing for the inspection and setting everything up even before the Hydro folks arrived to turn off the electricity. By the time we returned to the house he had performed all of the work that was agreed to, was making sure that all the lines in the house were identified and labelled, and he even looked at some minor electrical issues we had from our house inspection prior to our move into this house.
He then provided us a full report, hardcopy and on DVD, including numerous pictures taken throughout the day of his progress with all of the inspection results etc.. The price was just as he had stated when he first looked at the work to be done and gave us his quote.
Finally, I cannot say enough about how amiable, helpful, neat and knowledgeable John was. He made sure we were fully apprised of everything he did, he left no mess at all, and answered all of our questions about this job and others we might want done in the future. I would highly recommend John for any electrical work you might have and I know we will definitely use him again in the future.
John was quick and knowledgable. I had a small problem with a light socket that sparked and melted the connection. It turned out that the wires contacted each other and John said there should be a box there to prevent it from reoccurring. It had been there at least 12 years with no issues previously. Very socialable and informative. Only small issue I had that no estimate was provided (I should have asked for one initially) and when completed I had to ask for an approximation of the charges. The bill was higher than stated but fair for the work done.
I would definately use them again for any electrical work.
We are very pleased with the electrical work done by Datawise Solutions, John was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to look into things for us, provide information, and to ensure that the project was managed well.

This phrase has been bantered around for decades and most people assign the origin of it to project management. So what are contractors talking about when we say 'pick any two?'
Recently I was involved in a conversation with some fellow tradesmen (I was the only Electrical Contractor (EC)) on the topic of "Value". The topic was really about how to explain to a client about the value of work that is not seen not "lipstick and mascara". So to help explain some of the differences in the electrical area I will offer up the following.
There is nothing stopping you and your Electrical Contractor from adding more to the requirements of the code to meet your future needs. While there is a cost to do this, the cost of doing it during the renovation or build is far less than doing it several years down the road where it is possible that you will end up removing some of your new renovation work to facilitate the new requirement.
Just like many other electrical contractors (ECs), I get numerous calls for estimates to upgrade a client's electrical panel or service. For many ECs this is the mainstay of their business and are very good at doing them quickly and with excellent quality. However, don't be fooled just because they have done many of these upgrades. Just like any other type of work, do your due diligence, ask the right questions and do your homework.
I was recently at a client's home and while discussing how to solve a particular electrical problem they were having, I came across a bundle of wires. I originally thought that they were computer network cables and then I took a few minutes to look at the markings on the cables and explain what they meant and what they might be for. As you can imagine the response was, "it's all Greek to me".
I am sure there are not many of us that have not been the brunt of a joke that took us unsuspectingly by using terminology that we were not familiar with. While we went along willingly looking for the left-handed screwdriver , when it comes to electrical work don t let your electrical contractor try to bedazzle you with terms and acronyms that leave you confused or unsure.
I can always tell when home sales are up or insurance policies are due; I get calls for aluminum wire inspections. One of the most important things during my AL wire inspection is educating the potential buyer or the current homeowner on the facts about AL wire and helping them sort out the hyperbole that their house is going to burn down because it has AL wring or some other ridiculous statement.
This is the call of hundreds, if not thousands of fire safety organizations and fire departments around North America, and I believe that most of us think it is true, smoke detectors save lives.
Everywhere in Canada a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is required in different parts of homes and businesses. A whole article on the building code requirements and interpretations could be written, but today I want to focus strictly on the facts and fictions surrounding GFCIs.
