Earl's Paintworks provided a quote to apply two coats of paint to all of the walls and all of the trim (doors, baseboards, etc.) Earl was very professional and candid about various details and nuances of this particular project during first visit to do the project scoping.
A few days before the job was to start, he arrived to do a test on a portion of wall and trim. We discovered the colours we selected would not cover in two coats. Each would require three and might even be four. Earl was reluctant to provide a cost for the additional coats, stating that it would not be proportionally higher than the base quote, as lot of the prep work for the first two coats was in place (e.g., removing all doors and associated hardware prior to painting) and until he actually did the extra coats, he felt any estimate would be high. Because of his attitude and approach during the first meeting, we trusted him and allowed him to proceed.
Our home is a 1600 square foot bungalow, with a finished basement, a lot of painting.
First, we'll address the workmanship. Since completion of the work, we've spent a week getting the place back to normal (moving furniture, rehanging artwork, etc.) and while doing so, closely inspected the entire job and cannot find any fault with the workmanship. We have built from scratch two previous houses and have never had as good a quality as this, including the nooks and crannies within closets. We can't believe that there is nothing that requires touch-ups/repairs.
With respect to the additional costs, the final bill was extremely fair. We'll admit that we felt just a little uneasy that we couldn't get an estimate up front, but those qualms were unfounded. We are finicky and don't heap praise lightly, but in this case, it is fully justified.
We would recommend him to anyone who asks and that's not something we do easily either.
