This is my experience contracting with Mr. Alvarez dba Fixrite Services:
It it my understanding that Mr. Alvarez is not licensed as a contractor in the City of Hamilton; which I found out after the fact by contacting the City clerk, and claim to have proper liability insurance; although Mr. Alvarez never provided said documents at the time of contract or upon request afterwards.
Mr. Alvarez was contracted to make certain modification to the interior- and exterior of my property. The estimated time of completion was ~9 weeks and despite approved change orders; with no additional time added, I decided to stop issuing payments when the projected time of completion passed by more than 4 weeks and more than half of the project still remained unfinished although I have issued payments for more than the price quoted in the agreement, including any change orders. As a result, Mr. Alvarez claimed that I breached the contract by not issuing more payments and subsequently abandoned the project although not yet completed as agreed.
When confronted about the delay and to cease payments Mr. Alvarez was, in my opinion, aggravated and not very professional. When presented with several letters of request for refund, Mr. Alvarez did not respond nor comply with applicable consumer protection legislation.
The Better Business Bureau and the Ministry of Consumer Services (Consumer Protection Branch) could not assist with my case as Mr. Alvarez did not respond to the communication from the BBB or the MCS, hence the cases were closed unresolved. (So much for consumer protection)
Mr. Alvarez was presented with several options to resolve this matter amicable, however shortly afterwards stopped his communication with me. Additional cost to contract other service providers were required to complete project.
Certain damages to my property that were caused and identified by Mr. Alvarez are still not repaired as Mr. Alvarez , upon my request, refused to provide valid insurance information. I would not recommend contracting Mr. Alvarez. (Please note that any statements in this review are my own personal experiences in contracting with Mr. Alvarez and are not intended as slander or defamatory or both. I hope your experience is better than mine!)
At first I was excited to have Stephen do the work for me. He seemed like a good guy.
Problems we have had are the toilet was not and is still not properly mounted. The shower in the bathroom leaks. I had to contact supplier on my own and get them to send me parts.
The basement at first looks nice but when you go in and see it everyday you noticed a lot of bad work was done. Lots of spots where they didn't finish sanding off the spackle on the drywall. The more you look you can notice that almost every wall was not sanded.
Lots of spots where the trim/baseboard do not meet. Wall in laundry room is not level causing laundry table to not fit properly.
Doors used were old but on bill of sale say new.
I feel Stephen was good at picking designs and colours but actually work he did I am not satisfied with it.
Clean up was not very good. Also upset that my wife's broom and duster were ruined.
Took longer than was quoted for the time basement would be fixed and final price and original quote price was more than over $5000. Communication at first was good but when tried I get him to come back for in completed stuff took weeks for him to come back. Asked to finish the leaky shower and in email he replied " so what's yor point you have 3 other bathrooms in the house".
Will definitely not use or recommend him again.
I thought I needed my pot lights brought to code by installing insulated metal boxes in the attic. Steve took the time to locate the model number of the housing unit and then search the specs. He advised me that my pot lights were code. No work need be done in the attic. Although Steve didn't actually do work for me, I highly praise his integrity and honesty. The situation was one that could have totally been taken advantage of and he didn't. For that alone, I give my highest recommendation.
Beware of STEPHEN ALVAREZ OF fixrite services. He works alone mostly but i think he has one partner.
I had nothing but headaches from him from the time i signed the contract. He was extremely polite at the beginning. He impressed us by sharing his knowledge and experience with us. His work ranges from mediocre to horrible. His website is clearly a hoax as well as the one good review above which is clearly written by his wife or him. My first bad encounter with him was when he went upstairs to my living room tracking dust and dirt. The footprints showed he was in my living room. I called him on it he denied it at first he then later told me my house was a construction site. I told him my basement was under construction not upstairs. He then accused me of harassing him. He also demands money before he does anything. If you are one minute late with a payment he will threaten to walk off the job even though his work schedule is way behind. If you have any questions or concerns about the quality of the work he's doing he will feed you ridiculous lies and try to blame it on something else that has nothing to do with it, if you dont agree with his bs he wll threaten to walk and tell you to finish it yourself which is what he told me. When i asked him if he was coming to work today, he told me i was bothering him and he did not ask me about my work schedule. Apparently he missed some things in the original quote which i think he did on purpose, he then told us we'd have to pay extra for something he should have quoted to begin with. At this point what are you going to do. The reason we chose him is because he told us he could complete the job within the timeframe we wanted. He was a month and a half over due. He did nothing for the first month after we gave him 25% down.. Again these are only a few of things he did to irritate me. The last and final thing he did that got right under my skin was threatening a lien. He had finallly completed the reno, we agreed to overlook the crappy work he did if he meant we would never have to see him again. Apparently he cant read his own contract which states that the customer has 15 days to make the last payment. He kept calling me and calling me just i called him when i wanted to know where he was. Guess he doesnt like it the other way around. I finally talked to him and told him it was my right to wait 15 days if i want but i will pay like i always do. He told me he needs the money now like some kind of drug addict. At this point he had all the money except for the change order. When he threatened the lien i had had enough got mad and lost it. I was going to wait out the 15 days but my wife and neigbours convinced me to just give it to him and never have to see him again. his name again is STEPHEN ALVAREZ OF FIXRITE SERVICES. The web has 3 different addresses for him. I dont know the correct one probably none of them. All in all one of the most unprofessional, rude, sloppy person i have ever met.
It is very unfortunate that this individual client has chosen to slander both FixRite Services as well as HandyCanadian.com with such ignorant accusations and lies.
The home owner and their father-in-law attempted to finish the basement over a year ago. Unfortunately, they did not know enough and ended up leaving the basement in complete disarray. Structurally, nothing was remotely correct or to code and in fact was outright dangerous. Electrical work was completely unsafe and very dangerous, including multiple hidden junction boxes not to mention one right in the ceiling of the shower. There wasn t one square or even wall throughout the space. Plumbing was done completely wrong and certainly not to code. There is virtually no insulation, vapour barrier or fire stop anywhere throughout. There is incorrect and inefficient ventilation and ducting everywhere.
On multiple occasions, FixRite attempted to bring these concerns to their attention and was continually advised they were aware of everything but were insistent that these areas of concern not be addressed (documentation to support all communications).
FixRite strongly recommended the space be completely redone correctly however again was emphatically told to just carry on.
Regarding financing; Our contract states clearly the payment terms including the deposit amount and due date. Furthermore, at the time of signing the contract, the home owners' specifically requested that actual dates for the installment payments be written into the agreement. Unfortunately, from the very beginning there was difficulty collecting payment from the clients. Not once was a scheduled payment made when due. (Documentation and witnesses to support).
Furthermore, the client's insisted that a company be invoiced for "Shop maintenance and repairs" at an entirely different address. On numerous occasions the client manipulated our invoice to suit their fraudulent interests.
In any event, FixRite moved ahead and under consistent duress and harassment (documentation to support) endeavored to complete the project to the best of our ability under the circumstances. In the end the finish product was very presentable. Multiple photos of the entire project are available for anyone wishing to review.
FixRite Services
Excellent Framer.
Finishing could use improvement.
Owner needs to pay close attention to project management and bill of materials and budget.
Thank you John:
While I appreciate your candor I am a little confused about " pay close attention to project management and bill of materials and budget"
We came in right on budget and only a week past our scheduled completion date due to a delay at the onset while waiting for the release of the permit.
Steve from Fixrite Services finished 1,000 sq feet of basement for us under 4 months. The project was complex as it included a custom home theatre, bar, kids play room and a 3 piece bathroom. Steve and his team were timely, courteous and extremely clean. They worked diligently without supervision and treated the project as their own. I would highly recommend Steve and Fixrite Services for any basement/home renovation.
