We were recommended Fortress by a friend and we are so glad we used them for our home renovation.
They came in on budget, and on schedule.
As we had to find alternative accommodation for the project duration, the time frame was an important factor for us.
We had regular progress meetings, to review scope and schedule.
Al gave us sound advice on the all aspects of the build, and was transparent with material costs and where we could save money. Also sound advice on interior finishes.
Al is an excellent Project Manager, he coordinated all subtrades perfectly, and took all of the stress off us.
His team were very respectful to our neighbours; they did a daily clean up, and did not block our shared driveway.
I cant recommend Fortress enough for a home renovation..... they are honest and truly hard working.
We wish we had another major renovation project so we could hire Fortress Construction again and the magic transformations would continue. Alan, Warren, Liam, Jacob and the many trades they engage are committed to excellent work and satisfied customers.
Fortress Construction gutted the main floor and basement to the studs, extended both levels by 14 ft, installed ceiling beams to span the open concept distances. Working precisely with our architect’s drawings. Alan nevertheless patiently consulted us at every step, showing us options, explaining the cost differentials, and ensuring we were delighted with the finished product. The work began mid-March 2018. Although we made several decisions that expanded the scope of the renovations, it was substantially finished by the end of July, 2018.

Our house was originally built in the 1920's, and renovated 4 years ago. Some of the original foundation remained after the reno (poor decision by the previous owner), and it was starting to erode, and in some cases, large chunks were falling out. We reached out to an engineer for a solution, and then contacted 4 contractors for quotes. Alan's quote was very reasonable, and, he was flexible in setting up payments. In other words, he did not expect 70% of the funds before he even stepped foot on my property (another contractor requested that ... ridiculous). I liked this, and met with Alan a few more times to make sure we were on the same page with the details (I'm a detailed person), since I wanted it discussed up front to minimize surprises.
We booked a date and prepared for the work. I almost gave Alan 4 stars for timeliness, since we had to move the date back a bit. But I just can't knock him for the delays, since they were caused by weather, and you can't do a job like ours in rainy/wet conditions. And once they started, they never stopped.
The crew worked hard, were courteous, and left the place tidy. I've read about horror stories with some crews, and just can't imagine these guys doing anything like that. Their workmanship was great, and they passed all the inspections without issues. I know a little about construction, and can tell you I was watching closely, and they were solid in how they do things. Another contractor talks about 'doing it right', and I can tell you Alan has that exact philosophy. Alan is very good with people, and can speak at a level you are comfortable with. I'm a picky person, and Alan conformed to my required style of updates. Sometimes contractors speak in such a way that it seems like a foreign language, and that is not the case with Alan.
I liked their workmanship so much, that I approached Alan about doing extra work around our house. Alan and his team renovated an old garage structure, dug and installed a new sump pit/pump, updated our electrical panel (including running a feed to that garage), removed an old ashphalt driveway, and even laid new sod for us. We are very happy with everything. He specializes in foundation work, but really has the ability to do much more.
We did have 1 issue after all the work was complete. Alan finished up around late August, so the weather was 'comfortable'. When the weather turned drastically cold (IE. -15C), then we noticed a cold area in the basement. So I called Alan. He sent someone over to review the issue, and he found an area that was a little light on insulation. He fixed the issue within a day, and the problem is now resolved. He followed up solid work with solid warranty work. I hope for perfection, but understand that things happen. That is why contracting someone that will stand behind their work is important. Top marks for Alan here.
Clearly, I have a lot of positive remarks about Alan and Fortress. I've dealt with contractors over the years, and had my share of problematic individuals. I can say with absolute confidence that I have, and will continue to, recommend Alan/Fortress to those seeking a contractor.
We are extremely satisified with the services provided by Fortress Contruction Incorporated and its CEO and owner/manager Alan Acheson. It is our pleasure to provide this excellent review for Fortress and Alan. When we started a complete renovation of our century home in downtown Toronto in Dec 2011, we hired previous contractors who claimed that they could do the job but within the first few weeks, we realized they were incompetent. This created a lot of problems with the City inspector. We were in a very desperate situation and fortunately, upon the referral of a trusted friend, we hired Fortress Construction Incorporated and worked closely with its CEO, Alan Acheson. We learned that Fortress and Alan were involved in the construction of a club house for a known golf club and many other major projects and these past work profiles gave us confidence in their abilities. Fortress was retained to do all the structural and non-structural framing of our old house and to fix the sagging flooring of the whole house and to construct an elevator hoistway. All of these were extremely complex aspects of construction that require exceptional skills and a very diverse and solid knowledge base in order to deal with all the unexpected circumstances of an old house. Alan and his crew delivered excellent results in all aspects of the work and they finished within budget and on time. Most importantly, Alan was very honest and very fair with his pricing and he always shows a keen interest in giving his clients a perfect performance. He was determined to fix all the deficiencies made by other previous contractors without any extra charge to us as he considered giving a perfect end-product to his clients a top priority. We are very satisfied with Alan ‘s work. He gave us close personal attention and was very pleasant (and humorous) to deal with. We highly recommend Fortress and Alan to anyone who needs any renovation work as Alan and his company are no doubt top-notch contractors/renovators.
