Gabriel installed 500 ft of baseboards in our home. He only charged us the contractor's cost for the boards. He worked around our schedule, was on time, got the job done quickly, and cleaned up thoroughly. He even replaced some of our damaged laminate at no cost. The baseboards look fantastic. I would highly recommend GL Installations for any home renos.
Gabriel at GL Installations did a fantastic job of installing the flooring in our house. He was on time, clean, friendly and paid attention to detail. We would not hesitate to call him again if we needed work done.
Gabriel helped me right from the start of my project, answering any questions I had. He even was thinking about it hours later and called to tell me something that helped me in my pre install preparation. It was important to him that my project turned out the best possible. While purchasing our hardwood floor, we got verbal recommendation for "GL Installations" from the lady in the Richmond store where we were shopping for material. She said these guys were very fast. Since we had only 7 days to finish the reno (painting and flooring) before moving in, we hired GL Installations for the job, after they firmly promised to be done on time, and gave us their rates and cost estimate
That's were the nightmare begins.
Monday, the owner brought his (in my opinion very young crew) for the carpet removal around 1PM. They phoned back at 5PM, so I can come and pick the keys to the condo. I've noticed that they didn't finish removing of the baseboards completely, and some of the garbage and large old carpet pieces were still laying around, but I assumed it'll be done the next day.
However, later that day my wife had a phone conversation with the owner. He told her, that he changed his mind, that the job won't be done by Friday because he was going camping on Thursday. He told us that one of the youngsters was his brother, and he didn't want to pressure him with the timelines. He also added that some leveling needs to be done, and that would cost us additional $2,800. I would like to mention that during this conversation a rude tone in the owner voice was sensed. My wife and I consulted after that phone conversation, and we felt that we were given false promise, that this was not acceptable behavior on the owner side and decided not to proceed with GL Installations. We also had a feeling that his price for leveling was not realistic.
The very next day the owner phoned to come and pick his tools, and when we met, he gave me the invoice for the carpet removal. Almost $800. On his, obviously pumped bill he had items like: "portions of the carpet were glued and hard to remove - additional $100". When I complained about it, he threatened that he will charge me for being late to open condo for him to pick up his stuff. I forgot the keys and had to come back, so I was late about 30 minutes indeed. I am writing this in hope that other people won't go through the same experience..
As the owner, I am truly sorry this customer feels they had a bad experience with us. We've been doing this for over 20 years, we are very experienced and do not do bad work. All our customers are provided with an installation warranty. GL Installations is driven by customer satisfaction and customer referrals.
The customer phoned us and asked us for an estimate over the phone sometime mid June 2015. I, Gabriel, explained to the customer that a proper estimate needs to be done in person. Customer had just purchased property and did not get possession of apartment condo until July 23rd. Customer asked we give them a ballpark idea over the phone anyway.
After our conversation, customer sent us numerous emails with questions such as where to buy flooring and if we could help them with suggestions on where to buy baseboards as well. We gave customer a few options where to go for flooring and also offered them our contractor account to save on costs.
When we started the work on July the 24th, at noon. I, Gabriel left two of my employees to rip out carpet and glued down tack strip around the perimeter of the rooms (that is usually nailed down which is easier to remove) These two employees are over 25 years of age and have been working in the industry for well over 5 + each.
After the carpet was off, It was determined that leveling was needed, that is something we don't know until carpet comes off. Leveling is very important when it comes to engineered hardwood floors and is generally more expensive then the floor installation itself due to its extensive labor, dust control vacuums and poly prep.
Self leveling material isn't safe to breathe. We will not install hardwood floor on an imperfect floor without proper leveling. In some cases, the customer has the option of signing a waiver form explaining that they've been professionally made aware of the un-levelled sub floor and that they wish us to continue with installation of hardwood against our strong recommendation.
In this case, Leveling on the weekend is forbidden by the strata. Monday would have been the earliest, at which point It would have taken us 3 to 4 days to level the whole apartment. There is drying time involved in that as well. Once the surface of the self leveling is dry, we need to test it's moisture levels before wood installation. Installing a hardwood floor in a high moisture levels can cause wood to buckle, shrink and create gaps between each boards.
Customer also mentioned they had a painter there while leveling and floor installation would occur. When leveling or installing floor, we can not have a painter there due to dust created by grinding down concrete and cutting floor boards. The dust would be all over the fresh paint.
Customer had a start date of Friday the 24th of July at noon, with an end date of July 31st 4pm. The main reason this job would have been delayed is the time it takes to level properly. 6 days to level, wait 24 to 48hrs for concrete self leveling to dry, rip out carpet, dismantle closet doors, re install them once job completed, baseboard removal, install new baseboards, installation of 750 square feet of tongue and groove glued engineered harwood is nearly impossible if done right.
We do not do rush work. If everything is planned out, and realistic time lines are set with the expectation that in renovations, some things are out of our control in this case, leveling.
