I hired J-Ren to install my flooring. They did an excellent job, even fixed a couple things that they noticed wrong. Tightened my railing, etc. Jim had very good attention to detail, his helpers were very good and friendly as well. I hired them again to finish my basement and was pleased yet again. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.
Wow, we have had the crappiest luck with contractors. Turns out our very first contractor we hired to complete our basement has decided after 9 months that he would like to try and sue us. Hmmmmm.....let me think here. We negotiated like crazy with him. Gave him a clear understanding of what we wanted and expected. Everything was to be done to code by his "master plumber" and inspected. He lied and said in Brampton you do not require a permit to finish your basement. When I found out you did, he starts back tracking and says he told us that. LIES!!!! But oh it shouldn't matter anyways right? Because he said every thing was going to be done properly and to code. Ha ha, ya right. Lets see here, his plumber Mario did not vent the plumbing properly, not up to code, violation # 1, then he installed some thin plastic tubing, similar to the one I have connecting my sink to my dishwasher. This for the shower. Totally unacceptable and wayyyyyyy below code, Violation #2. Not to mention the shower pipe was only 1 1/2", Violation #3. He reduced the toilet drain by an inch, which is again a big no no in plumbing and Violation #4. So what ended up happening. He had to have it all ripped up and redone. Then he tried to foot us with the bill. And now he has the nerve to try and sue us in small claims court for that cost. Yet that work was not even completed at the time. His new plumber still had to come back to finish off some of the work and he never did. Now this idiot thinks he can sue for work he paid his plumber to come in and correct but never completed.
So if anyone out there is thinking of using J-Ren DON'T. His name was Jim Pickett. Here is a link to where I found him. I used The Handy Canadian.
Today was the settlement hearing for J-Ren. We go in, the jugde speaks to us, asks a few questions and then looks at the pictures of the initial plumbing work. He asks Jim, is this the plumbing you had done? Because if it is, this was so below code. Jim claims he was unsure if that was the plumbing his plumber installed because he apparently was not there. He tried to justify his claim by saying that he was under the impression that we were not getting a permit and he had advised us of our options, we opted against it. The judge proceeded to advise him that that does not matter and he still required a permit. In the end, the judge advised him that based on the evidence if we went to trial, his claim would be dismissed and I would most likely have judgement against him for my entire claim. The judge also made a point of saying that he rarely comes to this conclusion. He asked me what we would be willing to settle for and we agreed $1,800.00. Jim however decided he is not willing to settle as he does not believe he should be responsible for paying for us finishing our basement. Jim continued to try and defend himself and insist he should not have to pay for anything else. He asked to make a call to consult with his girlfriend I believe and came back and declined the settlement.
I mean really have some sense. A JUDGE tells you if this goes to trial, your claim will be dismissed and you will lose the case against you and will most likely have to pay the full $2241.00 and you say NO, I don't want to pay $1,800.00. DUMB! Pictures of this job can be seen by goggling Jim Pickett and M and D renovations
It was a pleasure working with Jim and his team and I would highly recommend them. We hired J-Ren to build a fence and deck for us as well as paint parts of the exterior of our home. Jim's workmanship was outstanding and he took great pride in his work. He went above and beyond on this project and we couldn't be more pleased. His attention to detail is exceptional. We will definitely be using Jim and the team at J-Ren for future renovation projects.
J-Ren came to my home to assist with two smaller projects, and I would heartily recommend them to anyone. The communication, standard of work, and courtesy were of the highest standard. Thank you Jim and Gil, you are first class.

On the flipside, there are also contractors charging a lot more for the exact same quality work as J-Ren is providing. We pride ourself on being "in the middle" of these two extremes.
