Mike and his team were incredible to work with while updating our flooring on the main level. We moved in a year ago and didn't anticipate having to change the floor on the main level so soon but poor workmanship led to the tile cracking and grout popping up making it unsafe for us and our daughter. While receiving estimates, the cost was looking astronomical.
Mike was the first and only contractor to provide us with alternate options to consider that would be affordable and offer a long lasting solution. The insight into options available, attention to detail, and minimal disruption to our day to day was phenomenal. They recommended affordable and durable options that went above and beyond our expectations. We are so thrilled with the completed work that we have already coordinated future projects. Thank you for making our main floor safe again for our daughter!
We do not recommend this company. They are expensive, slow and disappointing. We are posting this review because we made our decision, in part, due to the positive online reviews and as we rely on reviews to make our decisions, want the truth out there on our project.
Mike’s Home Rejuvenation was owned by Mike and Jay until the end of the 8th week of work on our basement when we were advised Jay left the business. Mike did our estimate, Jay was the lead onsite to the end of the 8th week.
Mike’s quote to finish our basement was 30% higher than every other quote. However, Mike was available to start quickly (we know better than to go with a crew that is available but wanted a home gym due to the pandemic) so we went with Mike.
Mike’s quote said the job would be done in 5 weeks max. The job took 10 1/2 weeks. When we spoke to Mike & Jay about the delay (at the end of 6 weeks) Jay walked off the job for the day because he was really upset that we were unhappy with the delay.
We were told at the outset that the crew finishes at 1:30 p.m. on Fridays (they left at 10:30 and 11 on a couple of occasions. They worked until 1:30 possibly once or twice) . For the majority of the job it was a two person crew. One of the crew also left at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.
When Jay and the worker arrived on the first day they asked “what are we doing here”? Not a good start. Neither Jay nor the worker had power tools and borrowed ours for the first week until theirs arrived.
The crew never planned ahead: they were constantly leaving to buy screws and other supplies. They always went together, even when just one person was required for the pickup.
Mike’s quote should have included all work as the basement didn’t change after the quote, nor did the scope of work. Jay insisted on charging extra for shoring up one wall Mike was told would be an issue and for finishing the inside of a closet.
Mike said the crew would sweep daily. Jay started sweeping daily after almost a week when he left 3 inch screws on the stairs into the basement and one of us stepped on one and slipped going downstairs.
Jay didn’t know you had to tape vapour barrier in order for it to do its job. If this crew did your work before September 2020, you paid for a useless item.
One of the crew urinated on our neighbour’s house, instead of using the washroom provided for their exclusive use in the basement.
The only bright spots in our work with this company are Phil and Kevin. Phil came onto our site on week 8 for a couple of days and got a tonne of work done. When Jay & the worker left the company, Phil was our primary worker and he powered through and got the job done. Both Phil and Kevin had to correct many problems left behind by Jay and the worker and they did good work – they’re the reason this is a 2 star and not a 1 star review.
Hi Inga We are sorry you did not have a great experience with us. I think there are some aspects of your review that we would like to own and others we d like to explain.
Overall, we d have to agree that your experience with us was not great but also not in typical MHR fashion. The folks who did the great work for you (Kevin and Phil) are both still working with us, and the folks who did the poor work are no longer with the company. There s a reason we have successfully completed hundreds of projects with dozens of positive reviews online. But your specific project was unfortunately a brewing concoction of bad timing, COVID repercussions, and company partnership fall out.
First, the employee who urinated on the neighbor s wall was fired immediately. He was new to our company and clearly not aligned with our mission statement and values. We took care of that promptly.
Much of your review includes our previous partner. He is someone who is talented, and we ve done great things together in the past, however this project came at a time for him when the pandemic added many personal stresses. A short example being that during your project timeline his mother had to move under his care because of COVID safety and he had to become her primary caregiver, adding a lot of personal anxiety into his life. He was regularly assigned to pick up his children on Wednesdays and Fridays thus leaving early from your site. We understand these are personal issues and should not impact business, but we are all human and unfortunately these external tensions showed in the work. The combined situations impacted the care and demeanor for this job and we are sorry for that. This is not how we operate. We're all human. We all have stress. And that showed in the work unfortunately.
We have applied vapour barrier many times in the past - We have worked with Building Inspectors of Hamilton/ Burlington specifically on Vapour Barrier/ basement projects and we pass code with flying colours every time. Mike's business partner has since been dissociated with Mike s Home Rejuvenation. We have since hired 4 reliable hardworking people in the place of the two workers on your project. Our newest hires have dozens of years accumulated experience and a great track record of success and we are very proud and excited to bring them on board.
There s a reason we have successfully completed hundreds of projects with dozens of positive reviews online. But your specific project was unfortunately a brewing concoction of bad timing, COVID repercussions, and company partnership fall out, which has driven us to form a strategic alliance with businesses that have our same core values. Phil and Kevin are some of the best workers and renovators in the business and we are hiring more like them to ensure this does not happen again.
From previous reviews you can see this is not how Mike's Home Rejuvenation operates regularly. Since day one our core belief is that aside from our renovations, there s only two things we take pride in more: Customer Service and Client Care. We will do everything as a business and as a group of people with strong morals to ensure we live up to this value moving forward.
Mike and his team transformed our living room, dining room, kitchen, hallway and sunroom. We are so thrilled with our space now! I highly recommend them for a variety of reasons: 1) they show up when they say they will (sometimes unusual with contractors), 2) they stay on schedule, 3) their workmanship is great, and 4) the price quoted is price you pay.
You won’t be disappointed!!
Deb and Todd, Carlisle
The folks at Mike's Home Rejuvenation truly are "trusted pros". They have done amazing work at my home and I couldn't be happier with the results. But, what's best is that Mike and he team are super friendly, courteous and professional. They are fully transparent and highly dependable. I would highly recommend them and never hesitate hiring them again!
