"""""BEWARE"""""
""" If you don't read all of this, read the bottom for sure"""" I would suggest you read it all
I hired Mike, and his "misfits" framing crew to frame up a simple rectangle 900 sq ft cabin, with a post and beam covered patio off one end, and 2 small and simple, 280 sq ft buildings. Which they were over paid for and never came back to finish. The project was an hour out of Edmonton, and he and his "misfits" were hired because of his "apparent" knowledge, and understanding of the job, framing, roofing, windows, the post and beam, etc, and the fact that they were going to stay at, or very near the project, until completion. He was to supply all fasteners, framing nails, screws, staples, except the strong lag type screws which I supplied. (and his own tools) I had to supply both fasteners and some tools.
Not only did he, and his "misfits" show up unprepared, but as I began to find after completion the quality of work was terrible. It is a good thing I had enough tools, and fasteners for a couple small projects I was going to do, because they certainly didn't have enough for one simple building let alone the 3 they were contracted for, or even enough food and water, as we found out.
They were absolute slobs on the job site which we overlooked, and cleaned up after them every day.
We have simple square walls which some are not square. There were a couple very small closet type changes, which I drew out precise, and with exact measurements, and gave him 3 copies prior to starting, which he ignored until it created more work for him, and un needed material waste for me.
He also framed in a small stub wall beside the toilet, that backs on to an outside wall where he left, an 8 inch by 9 ft space with no insulation in my out side wall, which is hidden. There was plenty of insulation within a couple steps of him. Now I have to remove the wall insulate it and rebuild it.
The cabin is built on screw piles which were lined up very nicely. He built the cabin a few inches "out" front to back, and side to side, which resulted in me spending hundreds of dollars on purchasing custom made "much larger" "much beefier" top plates for the screw piles, and a full days work, to get them placed under the posts because of his poor measuring.
He and his other "misfits" incorrectly installed very simple windows, not "once" but "twice" leaving a gap between the wall, and the window jam each time, and wasting expensive window tape and adhesive. Another full day for 2, to remove the windows, clean everything up and re install the windows "properly". (the 3rd time)
Plenty of back framing not done, which I had plenty of material for, but was left for me.
There is plenty more, but I don't have time.
Now the worst!
Part of the contract for these "MISFITS" was to install the metal roof, which again "misfit Mike" assured me was no problem for him and his crew. Within a few days after they pulled out, it began to rain. It wasn't just raining outside, it was also raining inside under the freshly installed roof. As with the windows, the "misfits" came out to (improperly) fix the roof leaks, not once, but twice after initial install, and with $hundreds in extra material cost for me. Now screws are in at bad angles, screw seals are blown out, snow stops are improperly installed, and it still leaks.
I guess leaking roofs, are ok with "MISFIT MIKE"
Now I am certain, a "NEW ROOF" has to be bought, the old "NEW ROOF" removed, and replaced, to the tune of many $$$$$ thousands.
FYI. I have given him may opportunities, and much more than considerable time to rectify his problems.
We are at least a year behind, and out thousands of extra $$$ dollars. Thanks Mike
You draw your own conclusions.
Me,,,, I'm going to court, and so is Mike, and "misfits" if they even show up.
Zero stars is too many.
"BEWARE"
Misfit Mike wrote a rebuttal, that I hope shows along with my review, and these comments.
He states that his is a small company, trying to hold it's head above water. He should try having some pride in his work, and understand that others are not made of money either.
His comments are hogwash.
I asked him on various occasions to come and have a look at my roof. I even offered to pay him $300 cash for 3 hours of time should I have been wrong. He said he would in a couple of days, after finishing the job he was on. This was in early June shortly after I discovered how bad his roofing job was after the 3rd attempt by him, and his crew. ""He has still not come out"". I was not aware until we went up on the roof to install wood stove pipe, in June of this year and saw just how bad this job was after his 3rd attempt, and $hundreds of extra dollars spent by me.
Much like the windows that a buddy and I finally installed properly, after his second botched attempt.
I was not happy when he left the job (unfinished) with the promise to come back and frame etc the 2 small 14x20 buildings, which he also never bothered to do, but was paid for. I simply felt I had to chalk it up to a very bad experience, and move on. I was a fool for trusting him and paying him in full plus extra.
Unfortunately the people who may read this, wouldn't know who is right and who is wrong. If Mike wants to make people believe he does quality work, then he should have no problem standing behind his work. I am more than willing to put money in trust with a lawyer, and have him match it. If I am wrong, based on independent inspection. I will happily transfer the money I put up, to him, and write him an apology. If he is wrong, I will expect him to replace my roof, (properly), finish the unfinished, work in the cabin (properly), build the 2 small buildings to lock up and with the roofs on (properly), as was the original contract, and that he has been paid for, pay me for the extra unneeded money I have already had to put out because of his work, and transfer the money he puts in trust to me. The money I have paid him will not come close to the extra cost he, and his work will cost me to finish and fix his mistakes, and poor workmanship, however if he wishes he can simply refund the money I have paid him, and I will write it off to a bad experience, and eat the extra cost. How about it Mike?
It's amazing, what lies can be put out there on public forms.
We as a small company, have a hard enough time keeping our heads above water without have slanderous allegations towards us that are completely false.
How does a person respond to insults, harassment, and threats. We will not be swayed
or stoop as low as what we have read.
Over the many years of building in Edmonton, our company has proven to our clients
that we follow all building codes to the letter. Our homes pass inspection every time
we have never had any issues ever. We have countless amounts of reference. As for Mr. Gilcrest, he was happy 1 year ago when we left his project.
We have never heard back from Mr. Gilcrest Until 2 months ago and his treats, vulgar behavior, and lies made it hard to communicate. For example being accused of stealing then rebutting the statement. Just outrageous texts that are not worth a response.
We ask that this not be posted on Trusted pros, as there is absolutely no proof or truth to
these absurd allegations that Mr. Gilcrest has stated.
We received amazing service from misfits framing. They were knowledgeable on all aspects of our project, kept a need and tidy work site, and they worked around my schedule. The building inspector was pleased with the work they completed and passed with no problem. I have and will continue to recommend this company to anyone I know needing construction work done and can't wait for our next project so we can meet again. Mike Macfarlane is a great builder and so easy to work with.
