The work looked okay. Mitch assured me that the ground would settle and any work that needed to be repaired he will be back the following spring. the wall was completed in 2017 Nov. I tried calling him; he never returned any calls or ever emailed me. Whatever you do, do not refer him to anyone, his contractual word means absolutely nothing, he his not honourable, he took my 28,000.00 and ran. Not only is the walkway caving in, but the stairs are falling down. The job included two other neighbours, my cost was higher than the other neighbours, that was not a problem; the problem began when I was unable to locate him down. He changed his number. The company name also changed.
Scammer. Took the money and ran. We Should have listened to my gut instincts and did more research. He gets what he needs from you and never returns your calls, then you’re blocked and never get your money back. Please report this criminal and spread the word around.
We also have fallen victim to Mitchell Construction and his crew. Lesson learned but too late, wish we knew what we know now. If you see signs in your neighborhood advertising "basement, fence, handyman, etc. " displaying phone #289-943-0994", do your homework. Our experience with Mitch led us to believe we found the right company, great personality, great group of guys, that lasted all of a few days. The job they started back in early spring 2020 is yet to be completed, numerous calls and voicemail messages, which like others have said on this site, will get answered here and there with excuses and promises, but a no show. The roof is incomplete, missing tile and a huge gaping hole in the siding, the roof leaks thru the potlights that were installed, we had to reinstall soffit work that was laying in our driveway a couple times, the posts haven't been boxed in as promised as they have been cutoff in different lengths, the front step is incomplete, railings are loose and constructed out of used wood, there are split boards to be replaced, sanding and staining not done, the stain he had us select has never been put on, the step is done in a box style because the crew were told it is too expensive to order the proper step frame, therefore not measured properly, the front lawn was to be graded down to meet the interlock (we did it), our back lawn and our neighbors front lawn had to be re-seeded by "us" where they parked their heavy equipment, we have a shrub growing up under our front step because they didn't remove the shrub, and the list goes on. Mitch is well aware of all of this, asked him quite a few times in phone messages and emails to please come around and inspect the work going on. These guys just didn't seem to have a clue what they were doing during different stages of this job, roofing work and interlocking work, something they've never done before as stated by them and hard to do alone (often one guy here alone). Just to think we even asked Mitch on his initial visit when we got a quote to do our front step, to give us a quote on a new fence and a quote on basement renovations, which he so graciously gave us in a verbal estimate. We thought we had found a truly trusted professional in Mitch and were so going to go ahead and use his company to help with all of our construction needs until everything just fell apart on this one project.
Just recently, March/April 2021, one year later, we have had someone come out to look at the roof, the look ok their face said it all. Clearly Mitch's team knew nothing about roofing which is going to cost us more money to fix his mess. We have yet to hear from him, he has ghosted us, poor poor professional, I just hope he is not out there in another new neighborhood posting his lawn sign advertisements.
***Do not hire Mitchell & Co Construction aka Mitch aka Empire Construction aka Tailored Construction, save your time and money if you want a good job done***
On November 23rd, 2020, our elderly parents decided to hire Mitchell Carnie (AKA Mitch) to tile the entire main floor of their newly purchased bungalow. He didn’t have a business card when requested, stating that he “doesn’t make them anymore because people just throw them out”. That should have been a red flag but we overlooked it. He stated he could complete the work in 6 days, when really it took weeks (many times where we had to continuously follow-up as he could not be contacted). It is understandable for some delays to occur, but we provided materials as requested in a timely manner as requested. Only the first two days did his employees show up on time and worked a full day, all the days that followed they only showed up at 2pm-3pm and only worked till 5. The cement on the floor was not evenly distributed causing some of the tiles to be significantly raised in certain areas, the grout had to be redone SEVERAL times and to this day are still flaking and crumbling out of the tile space. Mitch even tried to pass blame to the supplier for not providing us the proper type of grout despite US PURCHASING THE GROUT MITCH HAD ASKED FOR?? We had to spend an extra $1500 in materials due to his and his employees’ careless handling. Lots of excuses were made to justify the poor work his company completed. They covered a vent by the front door and stated that they ‘did not notice it’. When concerns were raised via text and we requested him to come and discuss the issues, he ignored them. The only days he showed up promptly were to collect his payments. There are still so many tiles that are still moving (you can hear it and feel it), cement on our walls and baseboards, a freshly painted wall was scratched up, huge areas where there is no grout between the tiles, there were EXACTO BLADES carelessly left behind (some hidden under our baseboards), the baseboards were not properly installed so there are big gaps between it and the walls, they did not cut the tile properly for the bathroom so there is a huge gap between the tile and the vanity where they just covered it up with calking. He refuses to compensate us for the money lost from the damages his company was responsible for and for the TERRIBLE work another contractor had to fix.
This was a smaller job that I had Mitchell and Cole do for me in June. They planted some Cedars and cleaned up my interlock and did a few other things on the outside of my house. The The crew did not seem to understand the job and they did not seem to specialize in landscaping but overall I was fairly satisfied with the work they did when they left even though I had to have them come back and fix things up. I asked Mitchell when he planted for Cedars for me if he would guarantee them if he died and he said yes. I have been waiting all summer for him to replace the Seiter that died in the front of my house. Sometimes he answers my text messages but most times he just ignores me. I would never spend any more money with this company and I wouldn’t recommend that you hire them for an expensive job. If they can’t follow up on small jobs, they can’t be trusted with your money to complete a big job properly. I would just steer clear of of this The crew did not seem to understand the job and they did not seem to specialize in landscaping but overall I was fairly satisfied with the work they did when they left even though I had to have them come back and fix things up. Do your research on Mitch Carnie. Google him and read all the reviews on Empire General Contracting. The last company he owned would take homeowners deposits and not show up to do the work.
Before reading these reviews we used Mitch for a small job in our basement. We the hired him for a much larger job in our backyard and then came across these reviews. We were very worried about them so we asked him directly. He told us they were all true, but the fault was of his “old partner”. We decided to take a chance with Mitch. Knowing what we knew, we were very caution around payment structure. Closer to the end of the job, Mitch asked to be paid in full. We hesitated as the deal was “payment upon completion”, but then finally decided to pay him before the job was done. Big Mistake. After that payment we didn’t hear from Mitch for months. He left equipment, tools and even workers clothes in our backyard. It looked like dump for months. He stopped replying to messages. We still have so many issues left to be fixed, bowed fence boards, cracked stone, loose railings. If you take the time to do a little bit of research you will find real reviews, not these fake ones on google. He’s prides himself on being on Homestars, which now also show real feedback on Mitch.
Where there is smoke, there is fire. Do yourself a favour and find someone else.
Do NOT use Mitchell Carnie for any work.
Although he is knowledgeable, responsive and courteous prior to signing a contract, things change drastically after you have made the first payment. As he insisted at the start, we paid half of the contracted price (for fixing a squeaky floor and installing new hardwood) at the beginning - before any work was started (a BIG MISTAKE).
He was late (by 3 weeks) starting the work - always rescheduling but then indicating a problem that he had to address at another job or a family issue. When he finally started the work he came to our house with his crew, gave them instructions and then left. That as the last we saw of him.
His crew was a team of 4 guys (not employees but independent subs) who were long on brawn but short of skill or experience. They tore up the hardwood floor and laid new subflooring where needed. But the subfloor was not 'glued and screwed' as promised. It was merely screwed down and still squeaked. The baseboards were also removed (contrary to what Mitchell initially said) and some was cracked. They also shattered the protective glass of an electric fireplace - due to carelessness and lack of skill.
I complained about the existing squeaks and weakness in the subfloor and he scheduled one of the floor removing team to fix it - but then the COVID lockdown put a halt to that happening.
When our region entered Phase 2 and work could resume, I tried contacting Mitchel, by email, by phone and via his web site. There was absolutely no response. I even tried to find his work location, but the business at that address does not show any symbol of Mitchell Construction. After two weeks of trying to contact him, I have still received no response and now am writing this review to warn prospective customers.
So now, I have paid for half of the work, but we are still living with a bare plywood subfloor and no replacement glass for the fireplace.
There are two take-aways from this experience. The first is to NEVER pay for work BEFORE is it done and the second is DO NOT HIRE Mitchell Carnie (or whatever name he is using).
Huge regret hiring this company. I will save you the hassle google the owner Mitchell Carnie and you will see for yourself. He constantly changes company names as his reputation tarnishes. Mitchell is quick to show up and quote and collect money but he will not deliver what he promises and the quality of work done is below acceptable.
He will ask for a deposit, bulk of work halfway through and then the small remaining amount at the end. The first day they will impress you by having a team show up to remove everything need be and materials. Then he will ask for the second amount owing promising they will be done 2 twos days. After that you barely see anyone and the job will drag on for weeks. The final result, well my back patio they did has sunken and sloped towards my house so that is where the rain runs too. I had a side walkway done, they removed a window well and didn’t put it back proper. The walkway was also sloped towards the house. This called the water to run to the window well and soak the foundation making its way though a small crack into my basement which flooded. Weeks worth of broken promises to fix and then he tried to rip me off a fair amount of money for a problem they caused. The front driveway interlock they did had lights put in the interlock, well they worked for 2 months before starting to go out. This was last fall and i am still trying to get them back to fix the lights after all they guarantee work for one year at least that’s what they say. I had stone glued onto my front porch from them, right away I noticed two pieces were loose when I stepped on them and almost face planted. They reglued those but more have since come loose which I had someone else to secure before someone got hurt. I paid this company over 25k last year and regret hiring them. They have left me with big problems to deal with on my own. Mitch will not get back to you unless he’s making money from you. The sloped interlock I will have someone else fix as he does not have qualified workers to do the job properly.
