As a homeowner almost at the end of a basement renovation project, I feel compelled to share my experience with Tarek and Ahmad thus far. While the work is still in progress, I must admit that my overall satisfaction with the contractor's performance is less than stellar. The work started in October 2022. Now we are in July 2023 and the basement is still not done.
To start with the positives, Tarek and Ahmad seemed knowledgeable during our initial meetings, and their quote was competitive, which influenced my decision to hire them. They were also courteous and respectful during the early stages of the project, and their team arrived promptly on the agreed-upon start date.
However, as the work got underway, several issues began to arise. Communication has been a significant concern from the beginning. While they were responsive initially, as the project progressed, their communication became sporadic, and it became increasingly challenging to get updates on the project's status. This lack of regular communication has left me feeling uncertain and uninformed about the project's progress. I had to do multiple follow-ups, and I have often not received an answer to all my questions. The only times they were responsive were when it came time to receive a payment. Sometimes, they were rude when we asked questions. On the third payment, they even tried to request more than required for the contract for no good reason. In the last month, I have been calling them and have yet to be successful. My wife and I communicated with them via email, and they have responded, although not fully, to our questions. We have been asking for a call in every email but nothing was ever scheduled.
Another aspect that needs improvement is their time management. The project was estimated to take around 2 months, but we are now approaching the ten-month mark, and it's still far from completion. While I understand that unexpected delays can happen, the lack of transparency and updates regarding these delays has been frustrating. Most of the delays were created by them and could have been avoided. For example, a subcontractor used the wrong dimension on a window as per the permit. We lost more than two weeks to get the situation rectified, and framing needs to be redone as a result of the window, which has been pending for at least 4 days now. The city inspector is the one who informed us of this issue, and Tarek and Ahmad failed to inform us on the matter.
Moreover, the delays caused me additional expenses. I had recently built a fence, and the basement windows prevented the fence from closing. I had to pay an additional $700 to get the fence fixed. Mind you, no one told me anything about this issue, and I only found this out myself.
As the project is still ongoing, I am hopeful that Tarek and Ahmad will address the current concerns and work towards completing the project to a higher standard. Our biggest concern now is that we need the basement ready by end of July to accommodate our family members who are visiting from overseas. At the moment, the basement looks far from finish. Also, we don’t know if the finishing will look polished and professional as agreed upon in the contract. While I appreciate their willingness to rectify issues, my overall experience with this contractor has been frustrating so far. I hope that their team can turn things around and deliver a finished product that meets the expectations set at the project's outset. Until then, I remain cautiously optimistic about the final outcome. As a homeowner currently midway through a basement renovation project, I feel compelled to share my experience with the contractor thus far. While the work is still in progress, I must admit that my overall satisfaction with the contractor's performance is very low.
