I sadly hired Michel A Bastille December 18, 2007 to put a small kitchenette and build a bathroom in my basement. At first he was great. He showed up to work and put in full days. By the 2nd week of January it was like pulling teeth to get a hold of him, he was full of excuses as to why he was not showing up and not fulfilling his promises. To date I paid Michel $9700 for a project that after 5 mos is STILL not completed.
At this point I do not think that Michel started out as a con man, but I think at this point we can all agree that he is a thief, selling a false image and false promises. He MUST pay (literally) for all the hardship he has caused and be held accountable for all that he has done. I am currently building a case against him and want to take that snake to court. Anyone willing to join me in this is more then welcome. I can be contacted at: firstname.lastname@example.org
Unfortunately, I too hired the incompetent Michel Bastille of No Nonsense Renovations. My experience is exactly the same as the others. I live in a 1 bedroom 1 bathroom condo and I wanted to renovate my whole bathroom. He said it would take 2 weeks and I figured maybe 3 weeks would be okay. He started March 10 and was slow and full of excuses. After arguing about the time he took- about 6/7 weeks in, I gave him some more money and never heard from him again. At the time he stopped returning my calls, emails and text messages, I noticed that my keys were gone as well- to my condo and the building. I had to contact the police to get my keys back- which they did the very next day. I do believe he is a con artist and does not know what he is doing. The people I got to finish my place had to re-do a lot of his work. I hope the incompetent Michel Bastille is dealt with accordingly.
I almost hired No Nonsense for my kitchen, and I'm very lucky that I didn't.
Aside from the comments below, I now know of THREE other people who have had essentially the exact same experience.
At this point I'm not sure if I consider Mike (Michel) a con-artist or not. Initially I thought he was just a really dumb businessman, but all of these similar cases are starting to make me wonder.
Mike is a very personable and (outside of business) a like-able guy. However, in the end he is essentially stealing money from people. He has now changed all of his contact information, which makes it extremely difficult to find him.
It seems that Mike owes a lot of people a lot of money at this point. I question if this now blurs the line between a simple civil dispute and criminal case.
On January 20th, 2008 I signed a contract with Mr. Michel A Bastille owner/operator of No Nonsense Renovations to develope a basement of approximately 625 square feet. It was to include a bedroom, laundry room, a three piece bathroom and a living room. To say that Michel was over his head on this contract would be an understatement. Michel informed my wife and myself that it was perfect timimg, because he was working next door on our neighbours basement as well and the next day he would be going to the City of Calgary to aquire our building, plumbing and electrical permits. The next day (January 21st, 2008) he and his crew showed to do some framing in the basement. He was not to be seen or heard from until January 30th, 2008, only after I had called to him for the third time to find out where he was and what was going on. That was the beginning of the end with Mr. No Nonsense. He promised that he would make up for the lost time, so he and his crew then showed up for February 2nd, 2008 (Half Day) & 3rd (Full Day) at which time he gave a story he was having a bad time financially with his ex-wife, and wondered if I would advance the first ($8500.00)installment along with an extra ($1147.00)for additional shoring posts, I gave hime two cheques for the two amounts. That was the last time he did any work in my house, all I received from him was false promises, lies and excuses. My basement floor had been broken apart for plumbing pipes, there was broken concrete, gravel and garbage from one end of my basement to the other for over four weeks before I finally cancelled his contract through our lawyer. After having to dole out another $25,000.00 to complete and repair what Michel had started. I paid Michel Bastille over Ten Thousand Dollars ($10.000.00) for a couple dozen 2x4's, ten bags of insulation and some sub-flooring and a pile of headaches. Michel Bastille you are nothing more than a liar and con artist, you don't know where the truth begins or where the lies stop. You have taken monies from myself under false pretences, as you said to me on the phone, you wish to pay back the monies owed but you invested in your Company. When do you plan to come through with your promises, never I suppose, just like the rest of your words, good for nothing. Buyer beware of this paracite in your area, if you value your savings, do reference checks, check to see if they are a pre licenced contractor beforew giving any monies prior to the work being done. Oh yeah remember those building, plumbing and electrical permits he was getting, that never happened either.
