This was a terrible job. The quote was to supply and install a "Wonder board" sub floor and install the 1 ft x 2 ft ceramic tiles we had provided. Thomas showed up and started asking where were the glue and screws to install the wonder board he had quoted to install were? It went down hill from there. We talked about thin grout lines, "as thin as you can" It turned out to be "thinner than he could" as all the tiles right at the entrance to the kitchen (where you see it most) are all uneven with crooked grout lines and Thomas was not able to get the grout into his 1/16th inch grout lines anywhere. All of the grout started cracking out the day after he left and was paid. Thomas did come back and try to fix it but the grout just failed again. We talked on the phone after the grout failed the second time at which point Thomas got upset at me. We had to hire a Tile setter to come in and fix it. To save some money we removed all the gout ourselves and we found that it had hardly penetrated at all but was just skimmed over the surface. When the tile setter we hired was fixing the issue he supplied his own grout which was a (Fine Aggregate for narrow joints). Where Thomas made us supply our own grout and had only asked that it be un-sanded. As far as tiles go anyway I would recommend a tile setter that just does tiles. We hired someone to lay these tiles to save time and make our lives easier as we were already doing a lot of the kitchen reno ourselves. Hire Thomas from Once Upon a Home contracting just created a bunch of new problems.... Now we have to live with uneven tiles and had to hire someone else just to get the grout to stay in. I would keep looking.
Customer service is extremely important to us. Unfortunately, it is the nature of business that sometimes clients are not wholly satisfied despite one's best efforts. We are sorry that Allan was unhappy with our work. It should also be known; however, that for a job contracted for 2 days at a discounted price, we returned to his home no less than 5 separate days, including to re-grout the floor and discuss possible solutions. We offered to pull up and reset the tiles the client was concerned with; however, he refused. We wish him only the best with the completion of his kitchen.
Great job !!, once upon a home came in the day of the job on time, did amazing Work, friendly, courteous and professional.
Thomas was so helpful in bringing our project ideas to life. The kitchen looks so beautiful now.
Thomas gave us ideas on top of that, that brought this project to a whole new level.
Thank you once upon a home.
Thomas helped with a renovation I was performing on my condo. He was very accommodating to my schedule, and went the extra mile to complete the work as quickly as possible. The price was right, and I genuinely enjoyed interacting with him. I will be using him on future projects.
From our first meeting to the last day of the job we thoroughly enjoyed working with Thomas and Holly from Once Upon a Home. Thomas and his crew completed the agreed upon renovations of our kitchen and three bathrooms quickly, cleanly, on time and on budget. The Reno included a complete re-tile of the master bath, installing a new shower, kitchen/bathroom countertops, lighting fixtures and tile flooring. A complicated pattern on the bathroom tile was handled beautifully and Thomas had great suggestions on some small and inexpensive design features we hadn’t considered that improved the overall finished renovation.
Wow super nice guy, hard worker and professional. No task too small, great rate and now part of our furniture. Kept with a budget, assisted greatly in opening our new restaurant.
Would highly recommend him to work on commercial and residential. We have enjoyed working with him. 5-star service.
Thomas Birkett was hired with a firm deadline. Estimated work was seven weeks and wasn't finished at the drop dead deadline of 11 weeks.
Told us right up to the end he had never missed a deadline and wasn't about to miss this one.
Not only Did he miss the deadline and leave me in a mess for my company he told me he had another job and wouldn't be back for six weeks.
The work he did do was done by amateurs who were learning on the job and much of the work done was shoddy.
My wife pointed out a flaw to him in our laundry and he said it was "only a laundry."
I would never hire this company.
Dec.11 Update:
As of today my project is still not complete.
Much of the work has had to be redone as was such a mess
Almost every contractor who came in asked if I was suing Once Upon A Home as the job was done so badly.
As a contractor, like all contractors, the scheduling of multiple jobs is extremely important to both myself and my clients.
Hence, at the outset there was a clear understanding with the homeowner that I had another commitment in early September. Unfortunately, the homeowner delayed the onset of the job for 6 weeks. As with any renovation, unforeseen complications are to be expected causing timelines to be lengthened. Regrettably, despite being knowledgeable of both the magnitude of the job (kitchen, 3 bathrooms, laundry room and living room) and the window of opportunity to complete the work, as the job progressed, the homeowners incurred further considerable delays: repeatedly changing their minds, requesting additional work, and hesitating to nail down final design decisions. As a consequence, the job was not wholly completed on schedule; however, 3 rooms were finished, and the remaining 2 were 95% complete. An agreement was made with the client that despite only 5% of the work left remaining, they would not pay the remaining 25% of labor costs owing (upwards of $7,500). They would, however, be responsible for material costs outstanding, a payment they did not, in fact, remit.
It has always been my personal commitment to my clients, and will continue to be so, to be highly respectful of them and their homes and to go above and beyond what is necessary to make them happy.
Best Regards,
Thomas Birkett
The work completed at our West Vancouver condo by Once Upon A Home Renovations exceeded both my husband and my expectations. Once Upon A Home Renovation completed a full renovation of both our kitchen and bathroom, including the installation of new cabinetry, tile backsplash, appliances and hood fan, granite countertops and under the cabinet lighting in the kitchen; installation of a 4 drawer vanity and trough sink with a double wide internally lit mirror, tall matching cabinet, toilet and tub in the bathroom, and ceramic tile flooring with top of the line sound-reducing underlay in both the kitchen and the bathroom. The owner, Thomas Burkett was courteous, professional, and responsive to our ideas, providing valuable insights based on his experience. We now have a kitchen from which we love to entertain and a new, up-to-date, well-designed bathroom.
Once Upon a Home Renovations completed a full bathroom renovation including new floor and wall tile throughout, custom lighting, fully tiled tub/shower area, new cabinetry, sink, toliet and fixtures. Radiant floor heating was installed as well as motion sensor lighting around the main mirror, under the cabinet and in the shower ceiling.
The work was completed on time and on budget, for a very reasonable price and included many custom design features. I was and continue to be extremely happy with the result. It is a significant "wow" feature to my home. I have recently needed to have my home appraised and the appraiser commented that the look and functionality of the room has greatly enhanced the value of the house.
