Immediately after having Rainforest open and service (we had a broken sprinkler head) our system, we were hit with a >$600 water bill. As there was no visible water in our yard, we didn't realize we had a significant leak until we received the bill. We then confirmed the sprinkler system was the source of the leak by checking our water meter daily - the instant we turned off the supply to the sprinkler, our water usage returned to normal. When Rainforest returned to investigate, they indeed found a leak in the system, but refused to admit our water bill was related!! Adding insult to injury, they emailed us more than three times to claim the cost of the repair that finally addressed the issue, even though we paid them to fix our system in the first place and they failed to do so, resulting in hundreds of dollars of water loss. This is the worst case of denial I've even seen in a company.
This is an addendum in follow up to Rainforest's rebuttal. I will first point out that someone named David (owner?) from Rainforest has reached out to me directly by email and has been 100% courteous and civil. I still disagree entirely with their rebuttal for a two reasons: 1) The service guy who eventually found and repaired the leak in the drip line told my wife that 100% it could have accounted for our water bill. This is not surprising since the leak was a completely severed line the size of a garden hose. I'm not sure where David got his numbers from. 2) Water supply to sprinkler off --> water usage back to normal. Water supply to sprinkler back on --> water usage back up. We did this several times over the course of several 24 hour periods, checking our water meter at regular intervals, to confirm what the problem was. There is no other explanation for this. And it wasn't subtle. Our typical daily water use is .3-.5 cubic meters. On the days where the water supply to the sprinkler was on it was 3 cubic meters.
The client informed us at the end of the 2018 irrigation system that he had a large water bill. When we opened his system on May 14/19 we fixed a leak in the drip line and replaced a broken head. The drip line uses .05 Gallons per minute. For the bill to be $600 2962 cubic meters would have had to be used in a 30 day span. In a typical month that drip zone would have used .81 cubic meters. The likelihood of the drip line being the cause of a $600 water bill is nil. Detecting leaks in a lawn sprinkler system is difficult especially if its 10" below the ground surface. Usually a leak that results in a $600 bill in one month is a main line leak on a 1" pipe that is constantly leaking as its fully pressurized all the time. In 2 service calls we found no evidence of a mainline leak and no leaks in any of the zones. At the time of the start up we did find that pressure on one of the zones was low. We informed the client checked for leaks and found none. We suggested installing new pipe and the client elected to shut that zone off. Its possible that a tree root pinch and possibly punctured the zone line but without installing new pipe there is no way to know. We blew out the system this Fall with compressed air at 185 CFM. If there was a major leak we would have found it at the blow out. Leaks in an irrigation system occur for various reasons but we don't cause them. Leaks are frustrating for both us and the client and invariably costs us both money and sometimes leads to clients parting ways with us which is unfortunate. That being said the client has been informed that his $50 bill has been cancelled. The client was also thanked for his past business.
