REVIEWER'S NOTE: This contractor uses multiple company names, including Scala Exteriors, In Time for Finishing Touches, etc. He also uses his personal name, Antonio (Tony) Sinopoli. That's the name he used for his business and the name he made us make our checks out to. Be careful no matter what! He is a CON ARTIST!
DO NOT HIRE THIS GUY! Long story short, we live in a new development and everyone on our block needed to get the fencing done. Unfortunately, some of us ended up using this company/individual as a number of our other neighbours were using him to do their interlock and he was pressuring them to let him do their fences as well.
Though we didn't want to use him, we didn't want to be jerks and have a negative relationship with our neighbours. So we went with him (about 10 houses).
From the start, it all felt bad. When we asked for references, he didn't have any though he said he had been in business for 30 years. When we asked for WSIB information, he ignored us. When we asked for his company website, he said he didn't have one because he's "old school."
He asked for a deposit of 50% up front, which most of us refused and instead gave him 20%. Since then, he has done nothing. Every time we call him, he has an excuse; too much rain, can't get the sub-contractors out, etc. (Trust me, I know we sound like suckers and we deserve this.) Our only reason to believe that he will still do the work is that one of the neighbours who is having him do his interlock is actually a family friend of this guy and would also lose a lot of money.
Anyways, he's had three solid days to work now and has only managed to get the cross beams for each post up. It took him close to a month to drill the holes for a bunch of the posts (not all of them, mind you.) Anyways, he claims he can get the work done by the end of the week. I doubt he would be able to complete it by the end of the summer. All he does, when he does show up, is stand around while his kid does the work.
One of our neighbours did find out this guy is currently under investigation by the Ministry of Consumer Protection, so we do have some leverage there. He's advised us that if he doesn't complete the work as promised by the end of the week, that we should report him to the Ministry, which will just strengthen their case against him.
Anyways, that's my story. Buyer beware. Hopefully this review will help anyone else approached by this company to do work for them. (He had nothing up here before that I could find.)
UPDATE: So we ended up terminating our agreement with this guy. After two solid days of good weather, all he was able to do was get the top and bottom cross beams up for the fence and they were done poorly as well. There were large gaps between the posts and the beams, the screws were visible, they were unevenly placed and they weren't even aligned properly!
Fortunately, all of my neighbours had had enough. We fired him, but unfortunately we didn't get our money back.
Our neighbour who found out he is under investigation advised him though that if he doesn't return the balance of our deposits within 15 days, we will report him to the Ministry of Consumer Protection.
Hopefully this guy has more common sense than that, but who knows. For me at least, I'm willing to forgo my deposit, just to put this sorry episode behind me.
Lesson learned.
Scala Exteriors, o/b Tony Sinopoli, took the downpayment of $13,500 (thirteen thousand five hundred) in Dec. 2016. He did not finish one bathroom for 3 months. He claimed to be a 'builder' and general contractor with over 30 years of experience. He took the downpayment and went on vacation thereafter. He came back from vacation and did not keep any of his promises to renovate the kitchen, laundary room etc up until today. Right now, I have an unfinished bathroom.
His mode of operation is to give a very low written quote to receive the downpayment because, according to him, he buys his materials at whole sale prices due to the volume of his business. After the downpayment, he barely showed up. He contiinued to give emotional excuses - mother is hospital or he is in hospital. He knows the system and he is playing it very well. I am sure the system will catch up with him VERY SOON. Thank you.
