Two door to door salesmen came telling us we could save $288 per year [($171 monthly saving - $147 monthly rental) x 12 months]. Also, we were told we could claim a first year guarantee saving rebate from Smart Home Works Inc. if we didn't save more than the monthly rental fee for the first year.
After one year has passed, we actually didn't save any money but we paid $309 more than the year before we installed the A/C & furnace. With the expensive monthly rental fees we ended up paying $2,017 ($309 + $1,708 first year rental fees) more after installing the new furnace and A/C.
I have sent 24 months worth of gas and electricity bills along with a detail spreadsheet to Smart Home Works Inc. since Apr. 2017 (they have confirmed they received all the documents in Apr. 2017). We are claiming $2,017 as the first year guarantee saving rebate, this company just wanted to pay us $600 sth.. They said they would send out a cheque at the end of Jul. 2017, however, I haven't seen the cheque yet. I have been trying to contact Smart Home Works, but they have been ignoring my emails and no one is picking up the phone.
This company is a scam. Its not possible to receive any information from them. There are no savings, and they promise reimbursement in this case which is not actually possible to receive. They are liars. People should try to sue them and this company should not exist.
I bought a furnace from Smart Home Works roughly 2 years ago and, long story short, it had not been working as well as it used to, as of late. Upon calling their support line, we were asked if we had changed our filters and they were confident that was the case.
A technician arrived about 40 minutes later and he changed the filter for me. The old one was DISGUSTING and there was an impressive amount of matted hair stuck to it.
He left us a few spare filters as well, since we are entitled to a free filter every year, and instructed us to change it every 6 months or so.
Thank you VERY much Smart Home Works! Your service was very much appreciated.
This company provides horrible service and takes down any bad reviews it gets. They will not stand behind their work so do not hire. They charge $100 just to show up when it was their shoddy work that causes them to come back. Then they didn't have what they needed so they had to come back and want to charge you another hundred dollars. Rip Off!
This is a business that exemplifies poor customer service, is profit-driven, is aggressive, and lacks integrity. I didn't choose to sign with this company, our builder did (Geranium Homes - may want to reconsider).
My neighbours and I have never been billed for the rental charges, and some had moved into their homes over a year ago. Suddenly, representatives from this company began calling and knocking on our doors, soliciting private and confidential information relating to our Enbridge account and banking information. Due to privacy reasons and on the advice of Enbridge, we refused to disclose the requested. Not to mention this company's information did not match the one on our contract. When the confusion was finally settled (they changed their company name, website and contact number, and had issues with the payment process - wait, no one at the company thought to verify payment information for a year?), we began coordinating with them to resolve the outstanding amount and the rental charges going forward. They would not send us a bill for payment but would pressured us to fill out a pre-authorized debit form. At the same time, a collections agency is harassing us with calls about the overdue charges and the customer service reps are threatening to make us pay for the units if payments are not made - did I mention they have yet to let us know the outstanding amount and send us a bill?
We are extremely displeased with our experience with Smart Homeworks, and the issues remain unresolved.
I would give these guys 0 stars if I could, but they will have to take my 1 star as me being generous with my description of the services I received.
Recently my wife and I purchased a home where the previous owner had purchased a new furnace from Smart Home Works just 6 months prior to us moving in. After a month of living in the house we had to call them to come and fix it because there was no gas being fed, turns out it was a defective gas regulator inside the furnace which malfunctioned and was covered by manufacturer warranty. This happened on a Thursday night in the middle of winter where it is -15c outside. Turns out I had to pay their $99+tx service fee for the technician to come out and tell me that the gas regulator was defective, that he didn't have the part, and that "someone" would call me back that evening to schedule a technician to come repair it. So Sunday rolls around, no one answers the phone, I have to shut off my water because of the risk of pipes bursting, and I wait it out till Monday. I call them Monday morning (took work off because this needed to be resolved) and they tried to tell me that it would be Thursday until someone could come fix my issue, and not only that, I would need to pay another $99+tx! So I fought with them and someone came and fixed my furnace that Monday because I had made a point of how ridiculous this experience already was.
So a month goes by, guess what, my furnace is doing the same thing! This time it looks like the condensation pipe was full of water and not releasing, after emptying it and clearing another tube inside the furnace I got it to fire up again.
I called them up today and asked them to come fix their shotty installation since it is completely unreasonable to expect a customer to have to do this much troubleshooting on a furnace that is less than 1 year old. They told me it would cost $99+tx again and there is no way around it since if the installation was wrong it would have not been working immediately after it was installed.
Do not ever buy or have these people service your equipment, they will not provide you any service guarantee or warranty even on their own work under 1 year.
UPDATE 1/27/2017 - After the same review posted above on Google Maps appeared and received over a dozen up votes, all reviews were removed from Smart Home Works on their Google Account. I still have yet to receive any communication from this company despite sending them an email as they requested.
I have had bad luck this winter. My furnace died a day after a bad snowstorm and we woke up very early because of how cold the house was.
My daughter noticed first while getting ready for school at 8am, so I called the first company i found on Google and they answered the phone.
My old furnace was out of warranty so I bought a new one from Smart for a relatively good price, after i did some shopping around.
Would recommend especially if you're in a rush to have it installed.
I changed my old honeywell thermostat to a programmable "smart" thermostat by Ecobee.
The technician just charged me for an hour to install the thermostat and even cleaned my furnace while he was here, which I bought from Smart H... just over a year ago.
Since the install I have only had to call the company once for service, which they helped me with in 2 minutes over the phone... But when you look for "smart home works" on search engines there are allegations that they are a scam. I hope you'll take my word for it when I say that this company hires great staff and friendly technicians. I don't know who in their right mind would call this company a scam as they have helped decrease my energy consumption drastically since I bought the furnace.. I was not overcharged and everything was black and white.
Furnace stopped working with the recent cold spell. Their serviceman made it here in about two hours which I thought was pretty impressive timing. He made a couple fixes and our furnace was back up and running.
Overall their service was very responsive and we appreciated the quick action.

I liked the Salesperson (Hadja) - She listened to me very carefully and was sure to provide our installation professional with enough info to come prepared for the install.
We had some time restrictions and she was able to dispatch (I believe his name was Mike) the installer within 1 hour.
I also liked the fact that Mike was very careful with our belongings and carpeting.
A+ Service, good job Smart Home Works.
