We had Syd and his team sand and refinish the birch floors on the main level of our home. Syd's attention to detail was evident from when we first met him for an estimate. I was told by other contractors that hardwood refinishing is not lowest bidder type of work so, although his quote was slightly higher than others, we went with Syd's Flooring after looking at online reviews. It was worth every penny.

Syd is very knowledgeable and walked us through the whole process, recommending colours and finish types. He communicated with us for progress updates and for any issues encountered that required our input.

The end result looks fantastic. The sanding and staining was done so close to the wall that we were able to put 1/2" baseboards without any quarter round. We will definitely be contacting Syd again when the finish is due for maintenance.

The birch floor in our kitchen was badly worn (scratches from a dog plus two decades of wear and tear), and after contacting a few floor refinishers, we settled on Syd's Flooring. Almost all the others didn't want to come & look at the floor, but rather, simply provided a quote over the phone based on the dimensions I gave them....not ideal when the client wants to discuss the work in some detail and ask questions, as we did. Syd, however, was happy to set up an appointment; and then spent over an hour with us looking closely at the floor, explaining his process for sanding & refinishing, discussing the merits of various finishes, and answering quite a few questions. Syd's quoted price was competitive relative to what other contractors had estimated.

Bonus: Syd suggested that he do our dining room floor at the same time - it would be only a bit more expensive, because the two rooms together were only slightly over the square footage that he would refinish for his minimum charge. We'd never have thought to ask about that, and jumped at the chance to have two rooms done for a very reasonable price.

Communication with Syd was excellent throughout; the job started on the scheduled date and was finished on time; and the promised 99% dust-free sanding was more like 99.9% (yay!). We couldn't be happier with both the entire process and the result - absolutely gorgeous floors. Our finish of choice was Loba Supra AT satin, which is more often used on commercial floors but will provide super-protection against scratches and general wear in our kitchen, which gets pretty heavy use.

Syd also recommended that we have him do a refresh of the floors, particularly the kitchen, after about five years, or when we notice that we're seeing a lot of surface scratches. This involves a deep cleaning, then application of another coat of finish; having this work done regularly will likely delay the need for a full refinish (which is a LOT more disruptive) for quite a few years. We weren't aware of that as an option for long-term maintenance of hardwood floors, and will definitely have it done when the need arises.

It was a pleasure to have Syd and Luc working in our house. As well as being top-notch at the art of floor refinishing, they're personable and friendly, and didn't seem to mind answering our questions as they arose during the process. Should we need floor-refinishing services in the future, we will definitely hire Syd's Flooring again; and I recommend them without reservation to anyone looking for this kind of service. They are, quite simply, the best!

We were very pleased with our refinished floors in August 2008. The service was prompt, courteous, and attention was paid to every detail.

Syd and Luc refinished my 60 year old oak strip flooring that was in bad shape after decades of wear and partial DIY refinishing jobs. They did the entire house end to end two months ago and I could be happier with the results. The sanding job was superb and great care was taken to get even the tightest corners in the closets flat. I didn’t notice any dust whatsoever afterwards, not in the ductwork or on top of the picture frames I left on the walls.

The best part is the house didn’t smell like a varnish factory afterwards. Syd has a complete refinishing system based on low VOC water-based products for those who are interested in a more natural look. It smelled no different than a fresh paint job. It was largely cleared out by the time I was moving my stuff back 5 days later. Just a minimal background smell for another 2ish weeks after that, not an overpowering varnish smell.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Syd. He was very patient answering questions by email after the estimate and seeing him in action, he clearly loves what he does.

Syd sanded and refinished our floors while we were out of town for a few days. We left old, worn, and doggie damaged hardwood and came home to clean, bright and well sealed floored. They even filled in the old cable and wire holes that we inherited in our older home. Syd was able to give a very fair quote and payment was easy through e-transfer. We were warned about the amount of dust generated by floor refinishing, but it was negligible. Overall a very well done, clean and professional job.

Syd Flooring refinished floors that has been done about one year ago by another local company (who actually threatened to sue me if I did not remove my review of them Trusted pro is aware). Syd Flooring corrected the rough, uneven sanding job that had been previously done and the application of semi-gloss product was even and very well done. Additionally, as they use 98% dust free machines and have a state of the art equipment. They are meticulous and take pride in the work they do. One can expect a great finished product, which it was, and without having to call an extreme cleaning company to wash walls, windows and so on. We now have beautiful floors, have received many compliments from friends and family and had no qualms about referring Syd Flooring to those that asked (three so far)

The hardwood flooring in the living/dining room in my condo was badly scratched by the previous owners who owned a dog. I did a google search and found Syd’s Flooring. The attraction to this company was that they advertised 98% dustless sanding. I must admit that I was very skeptical about this. I requested an estimate to have the floor refinished and was immediately impressed by Syd and his professional approach to explaining how he would refinish the floor…and yes it would be 98% dustless.

After the 3 day process of sanding, staining and applying the finishing coat I was truly amazed with the finished product. Syd’s Flooring did an incredible job refinishing the floor and matching the stair railing.

The 98% dustless sanding really was 98% dust free and I was surprised at how little dust was produced. When they were done, the remaining dust was that of not having dusted the furniture for a couple of weeks. Clean up was easy, and I was not left with any stain on the quarter round and baseboards.

They were knowledgeable, clean, careful, polite and punctual.

Our floor was professionally installed over 22 years ago and after 3 kids and 5 dogs tracking over the floor for that period of time I wasn’t sure that the floor would ever look good again. I got quotes and invited several service providers to come and see the floor before they took on the job. I got four quotes, Sydney was the only one to actually take the time to come and see the floor and discuss the refinishing requirements. The floor had several areas with deep scratches, water damage, and finish completely worn off. His price was very competitive and certainly superior in terms of the work that was going to be provided and the products being used. The end result was absolutely perfect!

Syd’s Flooring did an incredible job refinishing my hardwood floors and matching existing floors. To make a long story short, sadly, I had originally hired a different company that has been in business for a long time in the Ottawa area and the nightmare began. The original company (not Syd) was hired for a simple job, which due to their improper processes, led to me needing my floors refinished completely – the floors had to be stripped to bare wood and stained twice, and they still didn’t achieve the colour that I chose to match other existing hardwood, or a colour that was even remotely close. After the 2nd attempt and significant damage to my floor boards, I fired the original company and based on the online reviews, called Syd in for an estimate.

His price was slightly higher, but worth every penny! The difference in the process undertaken to refinish my floors, relative to the original company, was far superior and the outcome was outstanding! Syd and Luc were great to have in my home. They were knowledgeable, clean, careful, polite, punctual and communicative. Their attention to detail was impeccable.

The 98% dustless sanding really is 98% dust free. I am very particular about my house, and I was amazed at how little dust was produced. When they were done, the remaining dust was the equivalent of not having dusted the furniture for 2 weeks. Clean up was easy, and I was not left with stain all over my quarter round and baseboards, which was the case with the original company.

Learn from my mistake – Just because a company has been in business a long time, does not mean they are good. In fact, for floor refinishing, I found that Syd’s Flooring, a newer company (relatively speaking), was far more advanced, with the latest technology in floor refinishing, than the well-established company that I had originally hired.

I'm a general contractor, I had met Syd several years ago back when he was working for another flooring company. Knowing that he had struck out on his own I decided to get in touch and see if he had interest in our job.

My wife and I were looking for our floors to get refinished while we were away on holiday. We hired Syd’s Flooring to refinish our oak hardwood floors that had been covered for many years by wall-to-wall carpet. The work was done in three stages beginning with dustless sanding (a great feature that left the house clean and dust free after each sanding), a wood filler to fill any cracks and chips and three coats of a water based finish that had little odour and dried very quickly. The end result is floors that look fantastic, enhancing each room.

We ordered material after Syd's Flooring took measurments. They arrived on time and had respect for our house-put down matts and hung plastic as needed. All cutting was done in the garage as per our request. Floor was completed in very timely manner, hardly any wasted product and a good clean up after they finished including a sweep in the garage. Will ask them to come back to quote for refinishing some of our hardwood floors on the main floor level.
