The overall deck was well constructed, however the finishing was unprofessional. I asked for a privacy wall and what they did was tack on a couple of sheets of lattice it looks tacky and only covered half of the deck. The steps coming off the deck also looks very unprofessional and the block off side walk and I will be redoing them soon.
I can't caution people enough to stay away from Three Guys Construction. He sounds great and promises everything and then once he has you hooked with the project started, he will start with over charging you for extras. He was rarely there on the job and left the project in the hands of his head carpenter. Only problem was he didn't have all the information and made several mistakes. Some were fixed and others were just too big to change and we had to live with. For example. The shower walls were supposed to be insulated and I happened to be there when the shower walls were being built and made a mention to the tile installer that they should have been insulated. He goes to the boss and he has the nerve to say that I am getting in the way their work and they had to stop what they were doing. Luckily it was caught in time. The master bedrooms walls were supposed to be insulated also for sound between our daughters room. It was not and was drywalled over. There are more examples...
He rebuilt a couple eve sections, mostly reusing the materials from on the house and tried to charge us for new materials and extra labourer time. He did drop the price down a bit but only after I made a stink. The job took way longer (and is still not done) than it should because he didn't bring in another crew that he promised to do the exterior siding so the same few guys did all the work. So due to the project taking so long he says that his original quote (contract) was now expired and that now everything was going to cost extra labour and materials costs from then on (except for the exterior work that was a different contract according to him) We were dumbfounded. We ended up installing the floors and trim ourselves as his carpenters were by no way close to call themselves finishing carpenters (which he said early on that he would use). We ended up ripping off the trim that they did (that we payed extra for) as there was a 1/4 gap between the window trim and all the walls. He still charged us saying that they were going to replace it all for free once the head carpenter realized that the new guy was screwing it up(even though I found out later that he was cutting the boards for him all along). They also did not follow the instructions on the hard wood flooring and did not use a vapour barrier underlay that would have voided the warranty.
He did say that he would still honour installing that kitchen counters which we thought was odd but great news. That was in Mid November. Today is Dec 28th and we still don't have the counters and we are unable to get occupancy permit as a result of not having a working kitchen. He also told us in Mid November that he wouldn't finish the back covered porch even when the weather gets better even though we already paid him in full. He had no reason that made any sense to us. So not only does he have our counters (I hope) he also owes us money to find someone else to complete his work.
Gutters are important right (especially on Vancouver Island). Did I mention that I have signs of moisture (effervescence) in my crawlspace now since he did not and will not put my gutters back on the house. He told us that he did not budget for gutters even though weeks before he said that "gutters would be up by the end of the week". Now we are on the hook to pay for gutters. He told us that Mid November.
So he will say how highly skilled and how they "Do it all". I would make sure you get everything he says documented in writing and even record what he says to you.
Yea you just can't please everyone. This gentleman forgot to mention all the free stuff we did for him and that he kept bouncing multiple cheques and yet we never stop working.
Everything kept changing constantly and he expected us to just change everything for free when he wanted. We went above and beyond for him and still couldn't make him happy his project came out looking fantastic. Every one he hired had a bad experience he wanted to be the contractor and hired his own trades. So we did not have any control over his trades
And he thinks he can do every one job better. I saw this when he wrote it and saw him a couple of times after that and he pretended nothing is wrong. So you just never know where you stand with Mr. Aaron grant. We did the best we could for him and we are very proud of that project and out come. I still talk to him and have no hard feelings towards him.
