Popcorn ceiling

Good morning!

There is a few things I would need to know about the ceiling.

Has it been previously painted? How big of an area is the ceiling? And will the room or rooms be empty?

If you can kindly answer these questions I would be able to give you a rough idea of what it would cost.

If you are unsure if the ceiling has been painted before you can rub the ceiling to see if the stucco comes down easily. If the stucco is hard that means it has been painted.

About the only thing that can be done is to scrape it off.

Price depends on the size of the area, what lies underneath in terms of repairs etc.

Flat ceilings look much better, but unfortunately when you have popcorn or knockdown ceilings, whats underneath is the important question.

Most builders use this stuff to hide imperfect ceilings. Its way faster to use it than it is to make the ceiling flat. If it has already been painted, then you have a problem.

Unpainted popcorn/knockdown is pretty easy to get off but when its painted not so much. Is it painted?

There are a few ways to get rid of popcorn ceiling.

The cheapest way is to install 1/4" drywall over the entire thing.

Second have the ceiling skim coated with crackfilling il smooth.

Last you can wet the ceiling and scrap off the popcorn (this one is the most expensive to have someone do, but if you DIY then you can save).

No the door sweeps can be purchase at any Glass shop that does shower doors provided it is 3/8 glass shower enclosure. Mesure the length(if Plastic sweep) and you off to the races.

Caution must be taken when removing the old one as the glass is tempered and if the corner is bumped to hard the door will shatter.

PS check the bottom of the sweep if you have an aluminum one there should be an extrusion in which case you can pull the t sloted rubber out and just replace it . If on the other hand you have a plastic one you need to replace the whole length

Well there are a few things you can do. One would be more coslty and scrape it off and either leave it flat or re-texture. The other would be to just re-paint it. It is pretty much up to you.

As for cost, once again to scrape down the old popcorn and possibly fix any issues underneath is more labour intense so usually more costly also depends on how much there is.

YUCK Popcorn Ceiling. Not a nice site Ha-ha

It can be scraped of and a new look call California knock down can be applied. Looks a million time better. I would cost around $5.00 / $10.00. a sq.ft. depending on height of ceiling and location.

The biggest question to your proproject is, what is the age of the home?

Any home pre 1989 we properly take a sample to have evaluated by an certified lab to ensure it is negative for asbestos. Ceiling texture is one of the biggest culprets and is viewed as High RIsk being overhead.

Before anyone scrapes your texture ensure they know about hazardous materials and the proper abatement procedures. In our Province this is also registered as "Notice Of Project" that is posted with WBC (Work Safe BC) .

I'm a St. Catharines Home Inspector for Maple Trust Inspections.

Some ceiling textures can contain asbestos. The risk is higher in ceilings dating before 1980. Have a good look at this article for more information.

A textured ceiling or "popcorn" is used to allow the builder to escape the need to finish the ceiling; applying a skim coat to reveal a flat finish.

Trying to achieve a flat finish on a ceiling is difficult and time consuming. The ceiling can show shadows of imperfections if done incorrectly. Once an unpainted ceiling is scraped, the ceiling needs to be repaired or finished. Scraping a ceiling is easier when the surface has not been painted. Spray with water and scrape, its messy but affective. If it has been painted I would recommend applying drywall.

See if there is a local drywall or painting company in your area that has invested in a Festool Planex drywall sander and contact them.

In regards to your question: You could remove it by light wetting it than scrape off texture followed by two skin-coats, sand, prime and paint. Or it could be re-textured if you don't want to change the appearance.

The ceiling should be scraped. Then primed. Then a coat or two of plaster to smooth it out to perfection.

If the ceiling has been painted over the original popcorn, I am afraid you will have a lot of plaster to apply as scraping will be nearly impossible.

I have had some renovations in the past where the popcorn was so thick lumpy and un-even, we removed the drywall and applied new board on the ceiling.

But if it has not been painted, it is very easy. You just need a little time.

Popcorn ceilings are being eliminated very quick today(nobody waned them any more) the ceiling can be smooth and the cost is $3.50 per sq.ft.

Like everyone else is saying you can scrape it of if it has never been painted, It is a lot cheaper then everyone is letting on. If it has been painted you can knock of the high spots and mud the entire area this is more labour intensive or you can re board over top always use 1/2" if you use 1/4" and the ceilings are wavy it will just contour to it.

Yellow spots appeared on the stretch ceiling in the kitchen. I wonder if it is possible to wash the stretch ceiling somehow at home? Or it is better to contact the cleaning company? I've got a good mind, I might just do that, but there is no guarantee that I can do it. And there is a sort of thing, I`ve got a popcorn ceiling in my room. I want to get rid of it. How likely is it I`ll find an office that deals with popcorn ceiling removal at home. What do you think?
