I would like to make my garage door 14' wide. I have now a 9'x7' door with a 2 x 10 header. What size would I make the header for a 14'x7' door? Garage size is 18 x 24. It is a hipped roof so it is load bearing header that I will need to make. I do not want it to sag after a few years of use. Where would I get this made if it has to be manufactured. I live in the outer limits of Hamilton in Mount Hope.
Thanks,
Ken
14' would most likely exceed the limits of dimensional lumber even using multiple plies. Many lumber suppliers (at least here in Ont) will do the calculations for you using LVL or Parallam Engineered wood beams. However, this project will most definitely require a building permit (in Ont and I'm sure most other jurisdictions in Canada) as it is a major structural change.
Rob is right.
With a snow load of 50 psf a 5 ply 2x12 just makes it but your best bet is to visit a lumber yard or truss manufacturer that sells engineered beam products and get them to size it and provide the engineering with it.
