Hi,
We're not sure what to do here. We hired a contractor (by referral) in the spring to build some bookshelves and an entertainment unit. The work was to be completed by end of June. He took our deposit and has done no work, and won't return our calls. Searching for his company online, I learned that he's done this before. We were considering civil action until I was advised by police that this is actually a criminal matter. But we just want our money back. What gives us a better chance of satisfaction, suing or filing a criminal complaint?
Thanks.
Hi Mark,
Take it to the full extent. I say this simply because people like this are what makes the good companies look bad. If these people, these scammer's are actually dealt with harshly, it will hopefully clean up the market place of bad or illegal contractors. People like this contractor rely on the fact that you won't chase him. He's laughing cause he got away with your money. If you have a contract, contact police, if you have contacted police, have them follow thru with criminal charges. The good guys out there get the brunt of this as we become un-trusted and looked at as if we're shady.
I totally agree with Mark. There are to many good guys out there to let a few bad apples ruin it for everyone. Unfortunately we as contractors can't do it. I know it's probably not what you want to here. You may not get your money back sadly enough but you could stop him from doing it to someone else.
Best of luck

Hi Mark,
I would be going after the Criminal charges if I were you. You can also post a review of them on this site, as well as letting the BBB know about this as well. The more you spread the word about these con artists, the better off the whole industry will be.
Good Luck,
