Solar powered shingles serve as a conventional shingle for weather protection, while generating clean solar electricity to commercial and residential buildings. I Will be researching this further in with plans to install one a home this summer
Solar shingles have been around for awhile. They have, in the past, worked well in the more southern climates. In the northern climates, like Canada, they have had problems keeping the laminates from separating. Make sure you ask questions about that issue before you buy.
I am in to Solar supply and Install for Residential and commercial business. These are good for steep slope roofs BUT certainly NOT for low pitch or flat roofs for high snow areas. If they are buried under snow they would not produce any Electricity and the whole purpose is gone.
Secondly they are bit costly compared to the regular solar panels as they are still under R and D. Dow Chemicals are coming with these product but going to be fairly new I will wait and watch for putting money for entire roof.
Go for the regular system which is time tested and ROI is 8 to 14% with the Ontario MicroFit program is paying out for next 20 Years.
