We have a house which was built in 1989. The basement is unfinished and supported by 2 x 6 framing with a concrete footings. Unlike the newer homes, there are no steel beams acting as weight bearing supports. We are currently in the process of looking to finish the basement. One contractor suggested strongly that we need to build 2 walls one on either side of the current 2 x 6 framing before any drywall can go up. Is this really necessary?
Hello
It is something new in construction. If your Basement walls are cracked have to be repaired, if need waterproof have to be waterproofed. could be spray Insulation helps walls be more protected.
Hi James,
I've never heard of this but tequniques do vary across the provinces.
A little more detail may be required in order to get an answer here.
From what I get, you're saying it was suggested to frame 2x6 walls around the exterior perimeter & also 2x6 walls on the interior perimeter? If so...wow. Not in Wjnnipeg.
Hi There,
Steel beams can be erected, there is no problem there whatsoever. Many Homes are build with the concrete footings and that can be removed and structural steel beam installed.
