Must I use AFCI breakers when upgrading my 1997 house with 100 amp panel to 200 amp ?
Nope not required unless you add new receptacles
If you are not adding any new outlet , but by new electrical regulations law , new circut for outlets need to have AFCI
I agree with the above statements, that it is not required by electrical code unless you are adding additional circuits that require it. Having said that, they are a device that is available for additional safety and it may be worth considering.
Additionally I am now hearing that some insurance companies are providing incentives to homeowners to who install AFCI breakers. The AFCI breakers are expensive; about 10 times the cost of a regular breaker so you would have to do the math to see if it is worth the investment.
