Are general contractors required to be licensed themselves for small renovation projects if they hire licensed sub contractors to perform standard trade requirements such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc? Can the framing be performed by the general contractor?
Hey I own a renovation company and as an unlicensed carpenter I can do work myself that does not require a license as well as do sub contracting. As for my understanding of a general contractor they strictly oversee the whole job and are not allowed to do any work on the project, and must be all subbed out, and I am pretty sure they require a license as well. Will be following this post to get answers as well
Hvac, electrical and plumbing must be licenced, all other trades don't need anything but wsib and liability insurance.
I believe that Toronto is the only municipality in the GTA that requires a Building Renovators License. I have had some inquiries where the homeowners are having improvements paid for by the City of Toronto and they always ask for licensed contractors and insurance coverage. If hiring any sub-trades, make sure they are licensed, as those are usually required by the province. If working anywhere except Toronto should not be a problem to do framing, drywall, etc.
You get a wsib exemption for doing renovation work for the owner of the home, so you don't need it just liability insurance you need.
My understanding is that wsib is only required to cover employees other than sub contractors. The owner of the reno company who does some of the framing, etc does not need to be covered if they have insurance coverage. Correct?
That is correct

Thanks for the input.
Yes, they are.
Once liscensed they can ensure the content of the project and hire the right sub trades.
Hope this help.
