We want to replace the wooden railings with aluminum railings on front balconies and stairway to front doors of a duplex in NDS, a non-heritage zone. We were told by 1 contractor that the aluminum railings cannot be assembled with nuts and bolts, but must be welded type of railings.
Please confirm if this is true.
Bolt together railings are used all the time. I have never seen ones that where welded. After all they have to be bolted to the house anyway. Because it's a duplex they have different rules than single family homes. I would call your building department to be sure.
