I live in Ontario and I have a house built in 1990/1991. Is there any chance the popcorn ceilings in my house would contain asbestos? I was thinking of getting it removed, but I am not sure whether I want to disturb it. I am fairly certain that it should not contain asbestos. But, you guys are more knowledgeable than I would be on this kind of thing.
No espestos was used past 1972 so you should be ok however just to be safe get a test done.
Hi Martin, there should not be any asbestos in your popcorn ceilings since your house was built in the early 90s. They stopped using asbestos in stipple ceilings by the late 70s or so The Story Goes. You should be good to go. If you're looking to remove it the best way is just spray it with a water bottle and scrape it off with a large putty knife. Once it is scraped off it'll need a couple coats of drywall compound which I recommend you get a professional to do. Good luck. Jeff
Yes In the 90's stipple ceiling did not commonly contain asbestos, unless added in for some reason.
mainly two products were used ,
And both contain lime putty .
That is also being used today for the same type of ceiling .
Being that it is a popcorn ceiling from the 90s I'm going to say it's safe that is not. If you are truly concerned with it you could always just put quarter inch drywall on the ceiling up over top of the textured ceiling.

Texture popcorn removal involves much dust, but it's fairly easy process, that requires fairly simple tools and materials: scrapers. You can buy a tool such as the Homax Ceiling Texture Scraper, which also features a plastic bag attachment. Besides, you can use a 10- or 12-inch sheetrock knife. It also helps to have a narrower scraper tool, such as a trowel. But in general for the popcorn ceiling sometimes they call experts and they all do it themselves.
