Hi,
I would like to attach several decorative accent wall panels on my "TV wall.
Each panel is roughly 8' x 1/2' mahogany plywood.
My initial plan was to first attach them and then stain. I was going to use Varathane pre-stain, stain and finish oil based solutions. However, after having tried on a scrap piece in my garage, I realized that there is no way I am staining and finishing at home becuase of very strong odor. (I have small kids).
So now, I would have to stain and finish the wood in the garage before it goes on the studs.
And this poses the question on how to best attach it.
Will doing just glue suffice? My gut tells me that they should be nailed as well as glued, but how do you go about covering nail holes on a glossy polished surface? Another reason I think they should be nailed is because the entire 8' run between 2 studs is naturally not entirely flush, although it isn't terrible either - just some minor imperfections.
If it can glued only, do I need to have some kind of pressure on the wood while the glue sets? If yes, how does one do it on an 8' long panel?
Any advice would greatly appreciated.
I would definitely nail them on using 18 gauge air nails. You can buy wax crayons from Home Depot in a ton of different colours that match any colour you can think of. I would take a sample piece that has been stained to the store and find the crayon that matches. You won't see a thing!
Thanks a lot, Tyler. Will give it a try on a scrap piece that I stained to practice (came out nice, btw) and will see. Thank you for the suggestion.
Regards,
Michael
Forgot to ask... how far apart should the nails be?
Thanks again
I would probably have 4-5 nails into each stud
Hi Michael
Yes, you will have a nasty odor from all oil based products. Yes, I would glue 90% of these panels in place.( PL Premium ) You should have nice Mahogany panel mouldings to go with your panels. These will go all around the perimeter and some across the panel depending on your layout, obviously the point of the mouldings are to cover your finishing nail heads and to give your wall the effect of as many panels as you like. If your wall framing cannot be adjusted so the panels fit flush , you may have to put the odd screw along the perimeter to draw the sheet in flush. ensure the small ( #6 x 1 1/2) screw will be covered by the moulding. I will have to do some touchup Varathane pre-staining after
you have moved the finished panels from your garage to your TV room.( Use fans and open window for the smell )
Thank you Tim.
