Best way to anchor pergola posts

Hi folks,

I'm building a free standing 12 x 12 pergola using 6 x 6 cedar posts and want to know what is the best way to anchor the posts. I'll be adding interlock pavers once the posts have been set. So far I'm thinking I would have the posts set above grade on top of cement footings (48" deep) anchored using a bracket/rebar. I realize I have to be weary of lateral forces but don't want to worry about rot if I have to bury the posts. I'm in the GTA.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Will

Set base plate anchors in concrete is the clean way If you want bitumen and black plastic wrapped around post prior to drop on concrete. This method gives you more rigidlty.
