I have to reinstall installation in the attic of my mother's 40 year old home. Rodents have been in the attic and the vapor barrier between the drywall ceiling and rafters have been chewed up. I'm not sure to what degree as I haven't pulled the old insulation out yet. Before I blow in insulation, how do I properly recreate a new vapor barrier without pulling the ceiling off?
Personally. I would not bother with a repair unless there are signs of problems. If you have significant air loss in extreme temps it will condense into frost and melt when weather warms again. Which could cause staining on the ceiling. I do not believe that will happen. At that time should it occur then Mark it and later in summer make a small hole where the stain occurred and spray hi expand foam up into the hole. And patch and paint.
If you insist on removing and replacing the insulation then use the red seam sealing tape over the visible holes in the vapour barrier.
If it was my place I would wait and see .
Hope this saves you a bundle.
