How wide do basement stairs have to be in Manitoba?
Hi Jim
Depending on how old your house is and how it was constructed, some inspectors will bend the rules a bit and you could be " Grandfathered in . For new construction however this does not apply. 36" is a fairly safe size anywhere in the country but if you want to go narrower then that call up your local Municipality Office ( That issues building permits) and ask to speak to a Inspector and they will tell you right away.
860 mm (34") for new construction.
Thankfully the new Building Codes are a free download so anyone can look up answers; previous Codes cost over $500.
