My built-in microwave has died. I have been trying to find a replacement - but am having trouble finding the correct size - 2 foot, not the larger (much available) over-the-range size. If I have a trim kit already from my previous microwave, and a vent space already in the area where the microwave goes, am I able to install a counter top model that has a top vent in the area I have for the built-in microwave?
In general, counter top microwaves should not be enclosed in cabinetry unless there is proper ventilation. Some trim kits do not have louvered vents. Hense the microwave can overheat.
Built-in microwaves have an exhaust vent for the stove, countertop models don't.
The countertop may fit the space but it won't vent out your stove.
Examine, the Counter top microwave to locate all vents on the two Sides top and back panels. Since a Counter top microwave is designed to rest on counter top, the vents are often placed on the sides , to ensure the vents have a proper air space to clean out dust an expel hot air during the operation .These vents can not be covered in the build in hole, as it may cause the microwave to overheat or malfunction.

Counter-top microwaves are not able to exhaust from the range and will inevitably overheat.
