Can contractors charge homeowner to advertise?

My contractor purchased a new company sign, placed it on my property during construction and billed me for the sign. That sign has now been moved to the next clients property.

Is this actually part of the set up cost that all contractors charge?

No that should not be a charge.

NOOOO, do not pay for signage posted. Unless you was consulted, agreed and terms agreed. Then your "contractor" is SHADDY. If they need to bill you for advertising, they should just call it quits. SHAME SHAME...rep and quality sells itself!

Enough was said by the other contractors. The only question should be whether the contractor had permission to put a sign on your lawn in the first place. I always ask before putting a sign up and never charge for it. That would be just ridiculous.

The only possible scenario where something like that might make any sense is if the municipality required custom signage with a depiction of the front elevation of the development. (This has been recently introduced in our development bylaws.)

Hi,

Your contractor charging you for the sign is ludicrous.

This person has a serious problem with doing business properly.

That should be part of your contractor's overhead. Should never be charged to you, especially if you did not personally ask for it to be put on your property.

This is not something that any contractor I know charges a client for.

Hello Lianne,

On the surface your issue appears unusual. However, there can be specific Bylaws or Development guidelines in place that require your Builder to post signage specific to your project.

If the signage was moved to an adjacent property and not changed in any way, then it would appear to be inappropriate - but that is purely speculation on my part.Without reviewing your contract documents, Bylaws, or Development guidelines, we can only guess.

That said, anytime you are in doubt, check your contract documents.

No don't pay him a cent. If I were you I would make up an invoice and send it to him and charge him for using your property for his sign and tell him advertisement cost money. I thought I heard everything in this business. Totally unprofessional of him

Hi there...

As far as I am concerned......NO.

This should be part of overhead and profit.
