I would like to add a whole house surge protector. The surge protector call for a double pole 20A breaker which as luck would have it I have no empty slots. What I do have at the very top of my panel is a double pole 40A breaker which goes to an unused receptacle behind my gas stove. I plan on leaving the receptacle and wiring for potential future use but want to know if I can remove the wires at the panel and install a double pole 20A breaker for a whole house surge protector?
yes. ensure the surge you have is rated for a 40 amp breaker and you can use that. Leave the wire in the panel but tape off the ends of the old stove wires inside the panel for safety.
I assume you have a gas range. If that is the case and you do not use the 40A that would be acceptable.
