So I have recently started a renovation business and I do not have a carpenters license but from what I have found and read I don't need one. I have insurance business number and HST number. I'm just curious as to what the difference is if I dont have one vs someone who does? And curious as to what happens if they ever decide to regulate it one day and make it mandatory to have a carpenters license to have a renovation business which from what I have read won't happen because of the thousands it will put out of work.
I would really appreciate any input you guys have on this.
Thanks!
Hi Jay,
I've thought about this recently as well. I'm in Alberta and I think that eventually you will need a license to do carpentry work. Already the framing/Reno industry is getting more and more regulated as time moves forward. I do think that you will need a journeyman carpentry license for this eventually, however I don't think that it would be a hard date for regulation, but rather a system that is grandfathered in.
Just my thoughts!

Well that's my concern if they all of a sudden regulate it and I have a renovation company for like 5 years and then what all of a sudden I can't do it anymore because of this, I understand the licensing but I'm hoping that they will allow renovation business owners to take a test to achieve the license and be grandfathered in.
I know many many people in the home renovation industry some are red seal certified some are not.Does it make a difference i don't think so your going to get your good and bad in both areas . To be honest some of the very best renovators i know are not certified. And i don't think it will change if codes are met.
Thanks Karl
