When you vent a cathedral ceiling do the vent chutes have to be full width of each rafter?

When the ceiling was installed, the proper way is to have ventilation from the eaves to the ridge, and yes they should be rafter to rafter, There are Styrofoam inserts meant for this purpose, allowing for about an inch air space for the area between the insulation and the roof sheathing.
