I need to verify if a contractor actually holds a licence, that he says he does.
How do you find out if a contractor holds a licence?
Tina,
The contractor should have a paper copy of his licence. If he does not, you can ask him to get one. If he does not provide with a copy of a licence them do not hire him. Always check for licence information, insurance information and workplace safety information.
Good luck with your renovation.
Brad
We all carry a lic. You can view as well you should ask to see his liability insurance and ask to have a wcb clearance sent to you.
Here in Alberta we also have to show a pre-paid contractor lic. and bond if we ask for money up front. BC as I recall does not, but a really good contractor will also carry bonding even if not required.
Do not hire a person who cannot show paper proof with valid dates on them. You risk your money and home quality hiring these "chuck with a trucks". They will be far cheaper than proper contractors but you will get what you pay for.
Just ask for his license number. If he has a problem with that or doesn't produce it, don't hire him.
Just remember a contractor license is actually just a buisness license issued by the city, and some cities do not require one.
