I am looking to get laminate flooring installed in my family room. Cost is 23 x 11 feet. I don't want an expensive flooring, but something that looks nice and will last. What are my options and what would I expect to pay in total, for both material and labour?

Thanks!

I currently have carpet, so this would need to be torn up.

It really depends on what you're looking for. Generally the cheapest laminate flooring is about $2.00/sqft, but you can get it on sale often at Lowe's, Home Depot or Rona. Installation vary's based on contractor, some will charge you hourly and some will charge you a square foot rate. If you're paying more than $2.00/sqft for labour (or any more than $500) to lay the 253sqft of flooring you're looking to get done you're probably being ripped off.

However! The labour rate is contingent on the amount of work needed to lay the flooring. If you're expecting the contractor to remove and dispose of the carpet as well as do the laminate flooring then your labour rate just went up considerably. Also, a sub-floor may be required prior to installation of the laminate flooring depending on the condition of the floor, where it's going, and/or threshold concerns (height of laminate vs. transition into another room).

Not so easy exactly to give you an idea of what you're looking to pay without first seeing the job. As a ballpark, if you're just looking to have a contractor lay the laminate and that is all then $500 in labour is likely around where you'll be looking for the 253sqft.
