Cost of hiring a contractor for building cabin/home

I am looking into building a cabin/home on my property and I would like to know the average cost of hiring a contractor. I am new to this. The home would be on bareland with only power and water hooked up so far (no septic). It would possibly be a 2-3 bedroom 1000-1500sqft.

Only looking for rough costs right now.

Thanks.

Jen,

Costs vary but if you are not in a hurry, I'd suggest looking for a local (local to the cabin) retired or semi- retired person and get estimates. I charge $50 per hour but on larger projects I try to provide a ballpark figure for the building at different stages. The foundation, the framing, enclosing to "lock up" stage, roofing and siding, and any interior work. My reasoning is that you, the client, can see the progress and only pay as you go. It works for me and the client has control of any changes or issues that may arise. Ask around and get come comparisons. Don't pick anyone who appears hungry for the work, you may regret that choice. Good luck and have fun creating your home away from home.

Regards,

Mark

We would estimate around 240k without site costs for a minimalistic finish at that

Hi Jen,

You would be looking at a minimum of $300k.

Costs are high right now with lumber and due to lack of good reliable trades.

This wont include the septic which could run you about $40k.

Hope this helps.
