Cost to repair toilet and surrounding floor (rotted wood)?

Hello,

I was just quoted $1775 for a job to repair toilet leak and rotted wood around toilet base. This includes cutting out of old/wet/rotted wood and adding additional 2x4 braces to help fortify area for installation of new toilet. This price does not include price of new toilet, but does include price to replace all vinyl flooring. This is roughly 7' x 5' bathroom.

Does this quote sound reasonable? If not, what would be a fair price for this work?

It might be a bit high but actually when it comes to a smaller jobs sometimes it takes some more time to get it perfectly competed. If you can make it $1500 would be more reasonable otherwise just do it and make sure to be done right as this is the most important part on such jobs.

All the best!

Thanks for the reply Mike. It helps to have other perspectives. I thought this quote was a bit high as well. Is there a nice way to negotiate the price without creating any bad feelings? This guy is a licensed plumber and seems like he knows what he is talking about and would do a good job. Its just that I would also like to feel confident that it is a fair price. I would definitely feel better at $1500.

Based on the information you have in your post, I ran it through my estimate tool and wasn't that far off. Of course, I can't see other factors such as difficulty of access and other items that may contribute to the overall time required. Also don't discount the fact the contractor needs to spend time getting the vinyl floor among other things. I suspect the contractor also needs to purchase flooring in an amount larger than your bathroom.

I can't say it's an unfair price.

Raymond,

As mentioned, the price is in the ballpark. A basic toilet removal and replacement is not much ($100 - $200) but the flooring and potential for plumbing replacement can add up quickly. There is the flooring and sub floor that require replacement, and, depending on the degree of rot, possibly a joist section or two. Not fun, I know, but bite the bullet and get it done, ... by a pro.

It is too much for the work involved.

Removing old floor at joint and re-brace with new lumber and then new sub floor.

Remove and install new toilet.

Repair leak weather its braided line or valve.

Install new vinyl tile.

It's roughly 1200.00 to 1300.00 fair price.

1775.00 way to much 1500.00 with toilet.

It's not even a days work...

Cheers

Thank you for all of the feedback. It is very helpful as I do research on this project. I have a question for the professionals. Is this a job that can be handled by a handyman? Or do i need a specific licensed professional contractor, plumber, etc? Thanks for your input.
