What's the price range to punch a hole through a basement wall where a window currently exists to replace it with a door opening?
Also, what type of contractor would I contact to have it done?
Only looking for cost at this time.
It's hard to price this job until you know what all of the variables are. Generally speaking, it gets fairly involved with required excavation, drainage and structural work. The house will probably require underpinning. You want a foundation company for this work. I would also highly recommend getting an engineer in to assess the best course of action. Make sure you get permits for this work as well. The last basement door I put in ran about $16,000. Your best bet is to have someone in to assess. Also keep in mind that unforeseen issues and finishing options can inflate the cost rather quickly.
Hope that helps.
Thanks. That was very helpful.
Rob,
James is correct. It depends of the basement in relation to the outside ground level. If you are an a hill, and the door in question is similar to a walk out basement, the issues are small compared to an access to an out side dugout.
It also depends on what the existing walls are. Concrete with rebar, ICS, Pressure trreated wood, or other.
Plus, as James mentioned, you have tyo consider the future load on the area to be opened up for the door. If it is just a single door, not a major issue but if you are thing patio doors, different story.
First step is to contact a structural engineer to get the information and make your decissions from that point on.
Good luck.
This is a big job! Not just about digging out the ground and cutting a hole and must be seen. But you are looking at thousands of dollars.
